Actually, someone called "Chao Wangpin" (or Zhao Wangping?) has already
translated the Open Source Definition, available on the CLDP (Chinese Linux
Documentation Project) in Taiwan.  A mirror is kept at
http://www.debian.org/~foka/CLDP/
Don't worry, they have both Big5 and GB versions, so you can read them too.

I have kind of started cut-and-paste and slightly modifying the OSD
and put some of them into place.  I can send you both the Big5 and GB version
so you can work on one of them.  :-)  (Oh, as you probably know, OSD
is essentially the same as DFSG, with references to Debian removed.)
Also, I do not entirely agree with "

I would have to use Big5 (for now) as the master document, because
we will ultimately generate both GB and Big5 versions from the same
.wml files, and as you know, Big5->GB is easy, but GB->Big5 is
not as good.  (many-to-one relationships).  I will take your document
and convert it to Big5, and then do some hand-tweaking to fix the
correct "fantizi" equivalent.  :-)

BTW, index.wml and devel/people.wml have also been translated.
Well, kind of half-done, anyway.  Also, most of the terms in
webwml/english/template/debian have also been translated.  Sorry,
they are in Big5 code.  If you need to work on them, I suggest that you
use hztty.  (I wonder if there is an easier way.  :-)

BTW, do you have any Big5 X font on your computer?  I hope so, because
I haven't quite started modifying the Makefile etc. to generate
both filename.zh-cn.html and filename.zh-tw.html yet.

Is there?  Hey, that's awesome!  I was just thinking about that actually,
and I didn't know that one was already created.  Well, time to join!  :-)

Oh, BTW, could someone give us CVS write access?  Probably the arrangement
like the one with the Japanese translation team (One "chinese" account for
all Chinese translators) would be fine.  :-)  Another thing, does a translator
need to be an official Debian maintainer before he/she could have CVS write
access?  Technically, I guess not, but I was just wondering if there were any
such policies.  :-)

Also, could someone edit /etc/apache/srm.conf on va?  Please add the
following:

AddLanguage zh-CN .zh-cn
AddLanguage zh-TW .zh-tw
AddLanguage zh .zh  # Is this line needed?

And add them to the language priority line too, thanks.  :-)

Thank you!  They worked!  :-)  Yes, the files are generated as intended,
except that I haven't modified the makefiles to generate
index.zh-tw.html and index.zh-cn.html yet.  I have been using the
script ./Gen-cn-tw-pages.sh which calls a program b5togb that does
the charset conversion from Big5 to GB2312.  I'll have to get that
sorted out before the Chinese pages are ready to be distributed.  :-)

(I.e., ultimately, the pages will generate .zh-tw.html and zh-cn.html,
not zh.html.)

Hello Jay!

I finally tweaked the Makefiles (and languages.wml... sorry,
I tweaked the stuff below the "Do not modify the following stuff" line
so that it will point to .zh-cn.html and .zh-tw.html instead of
.zh.html.  Seems to work, I hope.  Also, I am using two charset
conversion programs in webwml/chinese/bin.  I hope it works properly.

If everything works fine, Debian Chinese web page is ready for debut!  :-)
Mind you, only the front page is fully translated, but that's a start.  :-)

or if it is intentional.

In the cleandest:: target in english/Make.common, is the line supposed
to be

or

?  (I changed it to the latter in chinese/Make.common, but just wanted

Installing the Chinese web pages

Could someone please install the Chinese translation of the Debian
web pages?  Right now, the links to the Chinese pages are already
showing on the bottom of the main page, but the pages do not exist.

Try again.  :-)  I fixed it a few days ago.  :-)

I made some changes to Make.common, Make.dep.generic etc. in the Chinese
directory to generate all three versions.  ;-)  First, the .zh.html is
generated, and then a charset conversion program (installed in chinese/bin)
is run and a Perl script generated to fix up all the stuff and generate
.zh-tw.html and .zh-cn.html.  A "make install" run would only install the
.zh-tw.html and .zh-cn.html though.  I have tried it at home, and those
changes were committed a few days ago.  Please let me know if it works or
not.

Also, as you might have noticed, I tweaked template/debian/languages.wml
so it generates links to both GB and Big5 versions for Chinese only.
Again, probably an ugly hack, and not very generic, but I would bet
such a case only happens with Chinese.  All other languages seem to have
a unified coding already.

Yes, I know, my current solution might not be the most elegant, but
it works for now.  :-)  Currently, I have set it up to use Big5 as the
master format (in .wml and the resulting .zh.html), but I am considering
using UTF8 instead 'cause Big5 has a few minor annoyances.  :-)

Yes, it seems like it.  Try this: "dpkg -s wml" and you'll see the 
following dependency information:

Depends: libc6, perl (>= 5.004.04-6), eperl (>= 2.2.14-0.1), m4 (>= 1.4-8)
Recommends: iselect (>= 1.1.0-1), weblint (>= 1.020-1)
Suggests: libgd-perl (>= 1.18-0.1), gfont, wwwtable (>= 1.3-1)

Try "apt-get install libgd-perl".  It is placed in the Suggests field
becauase it is non-free (the stupid GIF patent again) and since wml
can be used without GD.pm, wml only "suggests" it so wml can be in
main.  I wonder why GD.pm is called though.

Ah, I see.  Thanks!  BTW, how long does a wml run take?  If it doesn't
take too long (e.g. less than 5 or 10 minutes), could it be run more
than once a day?  :-)  (something like once every 2 or 3 hours would
be nice if it doesn't take up too much resource).
(Of course, this just applies to master and va.  Other mirror sites
don't have to update their mirrors that often.  :-)

Oh, another thing... is there a way to get master to do a "make cleandest"
run, maybe just for a language subdirectory when required?
e.g. I moved /chinese.zh-??.html to chinese/index.zh-??.html, but the
old files seems to be there still.

Yes, but most likely only an English translation of the Debian Chinese
Project page.  But then, if other language teams are interested,
feel free to translate it to other languages too.  :-)
Note that the page is currently under constructions, so it may
go through quite a few major changes though.

Did you add "Options MultiViews" in the appropriate directory
section in /etc/apache/access.conf?  Also, did you restart
the apache server after updating the configuration files?

:-)  I see.  Well, the /chinese/ pages won't have too many things in it
either.  However, the /chinese/ pages are necessary for the coordination
of the project, because there will soon be lots of newcomers from China, 
Taiwan and Hong Kong (I hope) who will try to solve more technical hurdles,
to improve multi-character support (esp. Chinese) in Debian.  (Hmm... Maybe
we should discuss with Debian JP and Debian KR too.  :-)  Yes, basically,
some thing like http://www.debian.or.jp/.  I suppose we could have
www.debian.or{g,}.{cn,tw,hk} too, but since there is already a nice CVS
system here, I thought it might be easier for us to use it instead of
re-inventing our wheels.

I was just wondering where is the best place to put it.a
I won't mind putting it in http://www.debian.org/~foka/, but then 
other people can't access it, and I feel I would be taking credit for
the entire project.  ;-)

www.debian.or{g,}.{cn,tw,hk} is okay too, but then, those servers
would probably be out of my reach.  (Okay, the truth is out... Perhaps
I am a control freak.  :-)  Seriously though, since the Debian Chinese
project spreads over two countries (a somewhat sad fact of life), 
I would rather not see a fork.

Well, it is not me.  <-- Typical example of a selfish individual because
his own problem is already solved.  

Anyway, I suppose such a script would be helpful for new translators
to generate the buttons for their own language.  :-)
A needed side effect also is to replace the current English buttons with
anti-aliased ones so they look better.  :-)

I don't know enough about Lisp and Script-fu to do such a thing, but if
you have time, and if other people are interested, sure!  :-)

WML 1.7.1 uploaded

Hello!  WML 1.7.1 has been uploaded (and installed into the FTP archive)
for potato.

Two things:

  1. wml has a -MM option (which wmk uses automatically?  Not sure)
 so it would automatically regenerates the html files if an
 included file is updated.  I.e., we can take out some of the
 hacks in the Makefiles.  :-)

  2. There are a few fixes to ePerl in the new WML (since ePerl is
 included in the WML tarball upstream and is built automatically,
 but in Debian, we love modularization, and so ePerl has its own
 separate package (as in upstream) and we have WML depend on ePerl.
 Problem is, I couldn't compile ePerl again:

Hey, thank you!  That works!  :-)  (I shouldn't have expected anything
less from our local glibc guru.  :-)

A minor complication though: the Makefile is generated from a very
small Makefile.PL, and I think the "-lc" comes from the PERL_ARCHIVE
variable, probably defined somewhere in Perl's Config or MakeMaker or
whatnot.  Yikes.  Oh well, I guess I could put in an ugly hack to tweak
the generated Makefile after "perl Makefile.PL" and before "make"?  :-)

Is it common to use IPA (International Phonetic Alphabet) to denote
the pronounciation of Swedish?  If so, maybe IPA is the solution?  :-)

If I heard your recording correctly, were you asking whether "Debian"
should be pronounced as [de'[EMAIL PROTECTED] or ['[EMAIL PROTECTED] (IPA 
notation)?  :-)

$(CUR_YEAR) undefined in webwml/english/News/Makefile

It seems that the variable CUR_YEAR is undefined in
english/News/Makefile, so the english/News/index.en.html won't be
updated just because something is added or updated english/News/2000. 
Please check and confirm.  :-)

I was wondering if CUR_YEAR should be defined "globally",
e.g. add the line

CUR_YEAR=$(shell date +%Y)

to Make.lang or Make.common.  I also noticed that in News/weekly/Makefile
it has already been done, but with a different name:

# Get the current year.
YEAR=$(shell date +%Y)

Perhaps we could reach a consensus to standardize this variable, i.e.
CUR_YEAR or YEAR, one or another, but preferably not both, to avoid
confusion or oversight.  And perhaps in english/Makefile one could do a

s/2000/\$(CUR_YEAR)/g;
or 
s/2000/\$(YEAR)/g;

BTW, Roland made the above patch for wml_1.7.4-6.2 in Debian unstable.
And indeed, this was recently implemented in WML 1.99.1 too.  :-)

Now the warning: it may break existing web sites, www.debian.org being one
of them, and my www.olvc.ab.ca site too, because I used something like this:

$WML_SRC_ISOTIME =~ /(..)-(..)-() (..):(..):(..)/;
local($time) = timelocal($6, $5, $4, $1, $2-1, $3);

which should be changed to:

$WML_SRC_ISOTIME =~ /()-(..)-(..) (..):(..):(..)/;
local($time) = timelocal($6, $5, $4, $3, $2-1, $1);

or something similar.  We'll just have to remember to change it when
www.debian.org (or master.debian.org) upgrades.  :-)

Other than this, and perhaps a few  changes, I don't foresee any major
problem for www.debian.org to upgrade to wml_1.99.1 (or wml_2.0).  :-)

Incidentally, mp4h seems to be much faster for Pass2-intensive pages,
notably one that uses navbar with submenu etc.  Pass 2 used to take up to
7.5 seconds with mhc, and now it is more like 2.5 seconds with mp4h.  
I'm really happy!  (Merci beaucoup, Denis et al.!  :-)

As Craig mentioned, this is no bug, at least not of Debian's web page.
Netscape 4.72 does not quite support displaying Unicode characters yet.
If you use Mozilla-M14, or (heaven forbids) Microsoft Internet Explorer,
those characters come out perfectly, provided you have the appropriate fonts
installed.  So yeah, those question marks will go away in the foreseeable
future.  :-)

Calm down.  With the new features in wml 2.0.x, there are a few minor
incompatibilities, and the Debian web site's WML source needs some
modification before it would work with wml 2.0.x.  Also, the handling
of nested tags by mp4h is being refined by WML's maintainer and
experienced users on the sw-wml mailing list as we speak.  Once
everything has stablized, and after modifications and testings by
Debian's webmasters, I'm sure everything will work fine with WML 2.0.x,
but of course, no longer with WML 1.7.x.  :-)

(When the switch over is complete, I'd say: Good riddance to the old
version; it has served us very well, but WML 2.0.x is even faster and
better.  :-)  Ho ho ho!

Are you using WML 1.7.4 or 2.0.x?  Debian's webwml is still for WML 1.7.4.
Yes, as Denis Barbier noted, it is only 5 lines or so of modification to
switch over, but when that happens is up to the Webmasters, as the WML on
va.debian.org (where the pages are built) needs to be updated too.

That's why I have both copies.  WML 2.x.x for the OLVC Home Page I'm
maintaining (installed locally, not as a .deb package), while keeping the
wml_1.7.4 package installed.

BTW, the error you noted below is probably due to the bugfix re: ISO date
format.  It was using something like DD-MM- instead of -MM-DD.

WML on va.debian.org was inadvertently (?) downgraded from 1.7.4 to
1.6.8 on June 17.  This broke some stuff especially the Debian Chinese
pages where special slices were required.  Could someone re-install
1.7.4 on va.debian.org?  There should be a specially-built wml_1.7.4
for Debian 2.1 somewhere.  Thanks.

Sorry, I didn't anticipate that my changes would create problems
for the wml2 migration ("{#mainbody:" vs. "{#mainbody#:").
I was hoping that the "{#mainbody:" syntax is faster than "..mainbody>>",
and that it is only a small change from that to wml_2.x's syntax.

BTW, what is the plan for the migration from wml_1.7.4 to wml_2.0.x?
e.g. timeframe, which machine (master or lully or some other?),
anything that we should note, and anything that we could help with...

Unfortunately, it still has some troubles.  While mp4h won't stop like
it did in 1.0.2, it has filtered out the 0xB3 character on the Chinese
pages on the Debian website when I tested it on my computer.  Not sure
why 0xB3.  I just took a look on the mangled Chinese characters and see
what is missing, and it seems 0xB3 is the only one missing for now.

Yes, this problem only shows up when I do this in webwml/chinese:
wml -p1-2 -q -D CUR_YEAR=2000 index.wml > /tmp/pass1-2

But 0xB3 chars remain intact when I do this:
wml -p2 -q -D CUR_YEAR=2000 index.wml > /tmp/pass2

(i.e. it works fine when no templates are included).  Hmm... I wonder
why...  :-)

Is it a small bug in the mp4h code, or is it a bug with the C library?
:-)  But yes, thank you very much for your help.  It works great now
after compiling mp4h_1.1.0 with --with-dmalloc.

Actually, yes, please force regeneration the Chinese pages _again_,
after you install mp4h_1.1.0-1.1 (i.e. my NMU).  You have installed 1.1.0-1
by mistake, so the Chinese pages are not too pretty now.  :-)

Hello Josip,

We need the   in the menu template so that the menu entries won't
wrap.  It has nothing to do with WML or mp4h's  and
whitespace=delete.

No, unless there are really some   that are unneeded.  But, AFAIK,
all the   are there for a reason, as I'm sure many of us share your
opinion that   tags make the template source harder to read.

While there is the deprecated "nowrap" attribute in HTML 4.01, and a
equivalent stylesheet tag, the use of   is the most universal,
guaranteeing that the text would be render correctly on all browsers.

You mentioned MENUWIDTH... that may not do what you think it would do,
when you consider that many browsers allow the users to change the default
font size.  The menu width stays the same, however, so with a large font,
the text in the menu is going to wrap, and it would look ugly.

Actually, I think I was the culprit here.  Some months ago, I changed
the following line in webwml/english/template/debian/basic.wml from:


to


So *everything* goes from right-to-left, just just the text, but the menu
too.  (The menu bar got switched from the left to the right hand side.)
It wasn't a big problem back then, so I didn't worry about it.  However, I
see that there are more problems than I imagined.  :-)

I have just reversed the change, and that should fix the problem.
Besides, Microsoft IE (and perhaps Mozilla, Netscape 6 and any other
compliant browsers) would automatically display Arabic/Hebrew text RTL
anyway, so the  isn't really necessary.  (I hope.  :-)

You just don't get it, do you?  Just about all the mailing lists /
newsgroups on the Internet are archived, and such archives are often 
publicly accessible through the Internet.  That is the way it works!
That is what a mailing list or newsgroup is supposed to work!
And no, the archivers are not claiming any copyrights!

Deja.com (now owned by Google.com) has a large archive of newsgroup posting
from at least five years ago, and was, is (or will soon be) available
publicly for all to see.

The Linux Kernel mailing list is also archived and available publicly.  For
example:

Have you seen anyone complain about it?  No!  Why?  Because whenever you
post to a public mailing list, you have already implicitly agreed that your
message will be archived for public viewing.

If you don't want your e-mail to be archived, then DON'T post to a mailing
list!  Plain and simple.  It is just common sense.  Don't throw in a whole
bunch of legal mumble to justify otherwise.  Don't try to change the way
public mailing lists work just because you alone don't like it.

Anything you post to _any_ mailing lists will be archivedq
in one form or another, and often available publicly.  This is the norm.
Don't expect otherwise.  If you disagree, fine, just don't post anything to
a public mailing list then.

Netscape 4.x is buggy and will have problem when a nested table doesn't

It's better to be safe.  Also, it _might_ save some the browser some

"Românã " or "Română", which is correct?

With respect to webwml/english/template/debian/language_names.wml,
which is correct?

ro => {
...
romanian   => "Română",
...
}

ro => {
...
romanian   => "Română",
...
}

I am convinced that the latter, i.e. using entities like â and
ă is more correct, especially Romanian uses iso-8859-2 such that
characters like U+0103 (Latin small letter a with breve) or ă
are displayed with the wrong accent in iso-8859-1 pages anyway.

I changed it from "Română" to "Română", but it got changed back.
:-p  And yes, this raw iso-8859-2 representation makes the word
"Română" looks quite strange on CJK language pages.

Okay, granted, Netscape 4.77 shows these ă as question marks, but
that is because Netscape 4.77's Unicode support is inadequate.  However,
I am convinced that using "Română" is the right way, as
all the other languages also use such entities, and these language names
show up correctly in standards-complaint browsers like Mozilla 0.9
and Microsoft Internet Explorer [sic].  ;-)

So, if "Română" is indeed the right way, perhaps we should switch
it back again?  :-)

Hmm... Sure!  By the way, the font used in the button is Arial.
Is that okay?  :-)  If not, maybe I'll play with Helvetica or other similar
DFSG-free fonts instead?  :-)

Anyhow, I haven't used the script for over a year, and I'm not sure if it is
compatible with the current gimp1.2 and friends, and it is time for me to go
to work, so I'll try to remedy the situation when I return in 10 hours or

That's correct.  Anthony Wong <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> created the buttons.
I don't know what program he used.  Besides, we don't have that Arial-like
style font in Debian anyhow.  I haven't tried using the debbar.pl script
to generate Chinese text either.  Maybe we should experiment.  :-)

Actually, the Monotype Arial font does include iso-8859-2 in full.
Those so-called Microsoft Web Core fonts include support for iso-8859-*,
just about covering all European languages.  :-)  The problem was in
pics.conf, because the ASCII "S" and "t" were used instead of
"S," and "t,".  But indeed, I should have looked more carefully before
submitting all the *.ro.gif files.  :-)

I just fixed it and "cvs commit" it, so it may take a few hours for the
fixed news.ro.gif and distrib.ro.gif to show up.  Mind you, these fonts are
so small _and_ anti-aliased, that it is really hard to tell.  It looks
more like a "short line below" rather than a comma or cedilla.  If this is
not acceptable, please let me know, and I'll do some editing.

Hmm... Ah, oh, I see what you mean!  iso-8859-2 uses S-cedilla, not S-comma!
S-cedilla is used in Turkish, not in Romanian.
Same with "t", but since nobody uses "t-cedilla", the Arial font renders it
as a t-comma.  But yeah, it looks kind of smudgy because of the way GIMP
does anti-aliasing.  No problem, I'll just edit it in gimp and drew in a
small comma like this, just like how Arial does it (thanks to good font
hinting which properly renders the comma at low resolution):

Suggested updates to y2k/index and distrib/index

Hi,

I was checking and committing some new translations from Debian Chinese
volunteers, and noticed that some English web pages may be a little bit
out-dated, or may need some clarification.

For example, I guess the Y2K issue have come and passed, and the y2k/*
refers to package versions from Debian 2.x days, and some packages on those
packages are listed as non-Y2K compliant.  Perhaps it will be
helpful to add a note that the Y2K pages are kept for historical purpose,
and that Debian 3.0 is likely to be quite Y2K compliant, maybe except some
unimportant or unmaintained tools.  :-)

As for distrib/index.wml, US$5.00 may be true for Debian single/double
CD set, but not for a modern Debian 3.0 full binary 7-CD set.  Perhaps we
could add a note to clarify that?  :-)

Cool!  Can we do that?  I originally thought that CVS accounts were
linked to our Debian Developers' account, and the language teams were
supposed to only have account names like "chinese", "japanese", etc. 
Guess not.  (I never looked deeply into this.)

But yes, it would be nice to have an account for him.  Should The
Powers That Be create the account for him now, or should wait until he
passes the NM application and become an official Debian developer,
which hopefully will happen in a month's time?  :-) (I guess Rex is now
at the "Philosophy Test".)

The acroread package will eventually return in some other form (i.e. as an
installer), so it would be nice to keep its old bug reports for now.  I just
have been procrastinating.  :-)  Meanwhile, some users are already using
the unofficial Debian package kindly maintained by Christian Marillat.  :-)

You are right.  We Chinese almost never put a space between the last and
first name for native Chinese names.  It is partly because vast majority
of Chinese family names is one character in length, and there are very few
two-character family names, which are easily recognizable by most Chinese
anyway.  :-)

I could no longer change it back to AnthonyFok.

To try to work around it, I tried changing my name
to AnthonyTFok etc., and finally TungLing.
It turns out that I could no not change my name
to anything that I tried before.
Instead, I get this error message:

This user name already belongs to somebody else.

MoinMoin must somehow still know that TungLing
is equivalent to AnthonyFok, because I can still
log in to Wiki with either name.

I know it is my own fault, but could some kind soul
help me look into it and returning my name to
AnthonyFok?  Sorry for troubling you,

Hello!

Sorry for "disappearing" for so long.  Actually, I am still around,
helping out with some company projects (R&D and occasionally teaching)
in Beijing.  :-)  Things just had been very hectic in the past while.
Reading through the renewed debian-chinese-* mailing lists, I see that
I had been irresponsible and my absence and silence had held back
Debian Chinese's development.  My apologies.  Anthony Wong is just as
busy too.

Another problem is that I have forgotten where I placed the password
for webwml.  I'll try searching for it more closely.  Anyhow, it would
be nice if Yu Guanghui, Meng Liang and other interested developers given
CVS commit rights so that they can start updating the translations on
Debian website.  They will certainly keep the Chinese translations in
much better shape than I had.
