Some extracts from http://web.cuug.ab.ca/~leblancj/nt_to_unix.html may be pertinent here: Engineers and developers recruited from Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) brought excellent VMS-based expertise into the Microsoft fold. Dave Cutler, considered the "father" of NT and perhaps the key developer of DEC's VMS OS, had been working at DEC on a new OS, code-named "Mica", meant to be a successor to VMS. DEC's highest management were troubled that Cutler was approaching the design from a hardware platform-neutral operating stance. Central to the Mica design was the concept of the "Hardware Abstraction Layer" (HAL) that offered a uniform software platform regardless of the underlying computer machinery. In retrospect, and somewhat ironically, HAL was a foreshadowing of Sun's Java platform, which has as its main goal the equal functioning across disparate hardware architectures and which Microsoft has fought an ongoing crusade against. Doubly ironically, in a feat of twisted logic, Microsoft has subsequently cloned Java into their own "C#" platform (a crippled Java-clone running only on Microsoft Windows). DEC executives, worrying that their proprietary hardware-derived revenue would suffer as Mica was potentially adapted by non-DEC hardware vendors, terminated the Mica project. Cutler, now adrift, was quickly integrated into Microsoft and began work on the Windows NT project in 1988. Amid suspicions of intellectual property theft, DEC eventually sued Microsoft, citing that Cutler and his Mica team had actually continued the same project within Microsoft, culminating in the birth of the Windows NT OS. After Microsoft settled the case with DEC for $150 million, inside sources alleged that large quantities of NT's code (and even most of the programmer's comments) were identical to Mica's. Updating to new kernel from 2.4.18-bf2.4
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 This is one of the doh! type questions but please bear with me. I have a box running Woody with the 2.4.18-bf2.4 kernel. After the advisory yesterday, I downloaded the recommended kernel-image. Then I realised that I can't use this because it would not have the specific modules I need compiled in. The only source I can find in the cache for my Woody box is 2.4.18 which is source for the kernel currently being used on that box. Can I use either the 2.4.19 source or the 2.4.20 source instead (both of which are available in testing) and do a recompile? Or will these not work properly with Woody? Folders in Mutt
I am a newbie to mutt - after flirting with a dozen or more GUI mail programs. I have managed to configure most of what I want in mutt but the setting up of folders just beats me. I'd like to have a few folders into which I can move mail after reading but if the mail supposed to go there does so automatically I wouldn't mind either. Gnome under Debian
I was using Gnome from the time I started with Debian, some 11 months back. I since went on to Helix Gnome and then Ximian - which I now wish I hadn't. When I start up my Ximian desktop, I get multiple copies of both midnight commander and Netscape opening up. I have looked in every possible location and cannot source the root of the problem. In your exim.conf add a line like this: host_reject_recipients = lsearch;/etc/mail/block/hosts I have added it in the main configuration settings part, just after the smtp_verify option. Basically, this is telling exim that the IPs to be blocked are in a file called hosts located in /etc/mail/block; the lsearch means it is a text file and a linear search has to be carried out to identify IPs which have to be blocked. (If you have a large number of IPs, it may be better to create a database; for that, refer to the exim documentation at www.exim.org) Then create this file (hosts) in /etc/block/mail (you can create it in any other location, change the path accordingly. S3 savage on potato
I have a new PC here that has some form of S3 Savage video onboard, which isn't supported by XFree86 3.3.6, but apparently is supported under version 4. I am running Debian 2.2r3 (potato), which only supports XFree86 3.3.6 -- it seems that XFree86 4 is in testing/unstable. Has anyone tried running potato with XFree86 4 from testing and what gotchas are there? Alternatively, am I better off just upgrading to testing/unstable? Sam -- (Sam Varghese) http://www.gnubies.com

.forward file format for exim
i have the following .forward file in my home directory: #debian lists if $h_From: contains "debian-user" or $h_To: contains "Debian-user" then save mail/debian endif theoretically, this should tell exim to sort incoming mail into the files specified as per the exim documentation at www.exim.org since it doesn't work, i must be doing something wrong. this box uses potato with a 2.2.19 kernel. could someone enlighten me? sam -- (Sam Varghese) http://www.gnubies.com
