You can create your own directory, say /etc/icewm.local, and you
should be able to make $HOME/.icewm a symlink to it.=20

# ln -s /etc/icewm.local $HOME/.icewm

In case this doesn't work, symlink not to the dir but to the files,

# ln -s /etc/icewm.local/preferences $HOME/.icewm/preferences

Can't help with the sg module, but I had a similar problem when
upgrading from potato. Make sure all of ppp's dependecies are
fulfilled:

Depends: libc6 (>= 2.2.4-4), libpam0g (>= 0.72-1), libpcap0 (<<
0.7.0), libpcap0 (>= 0.6.1-1), libpam-modules, netbase, sysvinit (>=
2.75-4), procps, makedev (>= 2.3.1-56)

(from apt-cache show ppp)

One of the libs is "new".

"Works for me". You might want the yenta_socket module and refer to
the documentation, esp.

/usr/share/doc/pcmcia-cs/README-2.4.gz
/usr/share/doc/pcmcia-cs/FAQ.Debian.gz

Also, the configuration file location of /etc/pcmcia.conf has moved
to /etc/default/pcmcia.

/usr/share/doc/pcmcia-cs/notes.Debian.gz

I hope this helps.

I have to mask a "&" in a URL (HTML 4.01 Transitional, text/html;

You can mask special characters a la "%20" in HTML. What encoding is

Low memory laser printers (LJ Series II)

2000-08-26 Thread Andre Berger
Is there a way to print to low memory laser printers? My LaserJet
Series II has 512k (or is it only 384k?) RAM, I would like to use cups
but can't print the test page at 150dpi. The 'laserjetlo' 150dpi
option from the magicfilter package works better, but the character
spacing on the second half of the page sometimes goes mad.

It should be possible to adjust the 'mx' option in /etc/printcap,
shouldn't it? 'man printcap' says the option adjusts the "BUFSIZ
blocks", but how big is such a block, and can I still print entire A4
paper pages?

As I understand it, /tmp/ must be owned by root.root, permissions
41777. An easy way to fix this is mc's chmod: tag everything but the
first two fields (user and group ID on execution).

Psion S5

2000-09-09 Thread Andre Berger
I have a Psion S5 and would like to mount it on my potato box, which
sould be more elegant than minicom/Comms single file ymodem
transfers. p3nfsd should do, but I can't get it to work. I simply
don't understand the documentation. I'm even unsure if I would have to
install nfs in order to use p3nfsd or not? There is no nfsc5.app
around (why?), will I have to compile it myself? I would have to get
the sources and the Psion C SDK, wouldn't I? Are there any
alternatives to p3nfs?

Any help will be appreciated!

Here's some prompt and window title stuff to play with for
e.g. /etc/profile. Adjust the settings the way you want.

# Distinguish user- and root prompt
if [ `id -un` != root ]; then
   PS1="[EMAIL PROTECTED]:\w\\$ " # user's prompt is normal
else
   PS1="[EMAIL PROTECTED]:\w\\$ " # root's prompt is red

export PS1

if ! [ -z $DISPLAY ]; then
   export PROMPT_COMMAND='echo -ne "\033]2;[EMAIL PROTECTED]:${PWD}\007"'

Aaron,

MMWY. Because the woody packages have the same or a higher version
number, apt-get dist-upgrade doesn't install _any_ packages. I got a
hint though:

dpkg -i -E -O -R --force-downgrade path-to-potato-binary-i386

copy Netscape.ad (for exmaple to be found at SuSE's ftp site ) to

But, more important, automate the unmounting of drives! E.g. in

Installation on a Mac is usually hard -- the folks who complain

I have found out that I can point Netscape to /var/spool/mail/$USER by
setting the file type of the Incoming Mail server to "Movemail"
instead of POP3 (I use xemacs-21.1.10's movemail). So I can indeed use

My favourite combo is sawfish (CoolClean Theme) with tkdesk (Be'ish
style) instead of gnome-panel. Sawfish is not much heavier than icewm
but has an additional xkill window menu item. OTOH, icewm can iconize
windows to the screen and not just hide them. Icewm is better than
asclassic insofar as there are buttons to toggle the full screen
window view.

If you want a really leightweight window manager, go for flwm.

Xemacs/GNUs and decoding attachments

I get this error when I try to decode an attachment I received.

How can I get rid of it? I'm using potato/PPC and xemacs21-nomule. An

I did, and the problem is gone. But I get errors on startup:

(1) (initialization/error) An error has occurred while loading ~/.emacs:

Symbol's value as variable is void: message-included-forward-headers

and when I do "M-x gnus":

(2) (image/warning) Replacing image converter pic->ppm

(3) (image/warning) Replacing image converter mag->ppm

(4) (image/warning) Replacing image converter pic->ppm

(5) (image/warning) Replacing image converter mag->ppm

The problem disappears when I remove the line

(load "mime-setup")

from .emacs, but unfortunately I have to "M-x mime/editor-mode" by
hand now. Any way to get back the former automatic loading?

You can map btn2 and btn3 to keys (without modifiers). To do so, you
need to pass arguments to the kernel, eg.

adb_buttons=127,52

(YMMV) If you're using Xpmac, you may have to pass argument to it too. Here's
a part of my /etc/dem/gdm.conf (YMMV):

[servers]
0=/usr/bin/X11/X vt7 -middlekey 135 -rightkey 60

(snip; YMMV)

I have a PowerBook 3400, German keyboard. To find about your key
mapping, type

showkey

on the console or

xev

(apt-get install xcontrib) on X.

Strange, fortunately never had that with TkDesk 1.2 on potato. Well
you should be able to force TkDesk to use a certain configuration.
man tkdesk says:

OPTIONS
   -configdir dir
  By default TkDesk reads its configuration either
  from the files contained in the directory
  "~/.tkdesk" (see section FILES below), or if it
  does not exist, from TkDesk's library directory
  (usually  "/usr/local/lib/TkDesk").   This  options
  lets TkDesk load its configuration files from
  directory dir.

Also notice:

  -default
  Let TkDesk read its configuration from its library
      directory. This means that TkDesk will start using
  the default configuration.

Dont' stick to the "Leave on password thing"; make different accounts
for the Kiosk- and normal users.
The people who told you about the loop already gave you the
solution for Kiosk mode users. The warnings about MIME (Java/
JavaScript/ Stylesheets) in Netscape are serious!

If you want a more complicated and, as the whole thing runs as root,
different approach, see the Kiosk (or was it Kiosk-Mode?)-HOWTO with
detailled instructions. You will get the idea there. Another way:

- run the loop as user
- set the kiosk user's shell not to a real shell
- don't use a window manager for the kiosk user
- Hotkeys and so on are usually disabled in XF86Config's server flag
section. Don't enable DontZap, you will never be happy
without because Netscape is _far_ from stable.
- use xdm and write the account name and password into its greeting
msg so that any anonymous user can restart Netscape on his/her own
- Write useful key combinations (CTRL ALT BS, ALT F7) onto the
monitor...
- Secure the user Netscape's preferences and bookmarks (root.kiosk
640, YMMV)
- Don't forget to set up a part of the loop that removes all files
that don't belong to Netscape, and Netscape's lock file (see the Kiosk
HOWTO).
- if you want them to be able to save pages to floppies, use autofs

The whole thing will _definitely_ compromize security.

You can set up a script /etc/ppp/ip-up.d/ZZZ so that it will be
executed when any other script has finished, something like

#!/bin/sh
wall /etc/ppp/ip-up.d/done-message

wall will display the contents of /etc/ppp/ip-up.d/done-message as
broadcast msg from root on the consoles. You could also play a sound

When my department switched to Linux (CorelLinux w/ KDE), our intent
was to provide a familiar UI for the designated Ex-Windows users. (We
purged that perverted slink stuff quickly in favor of woody w/ Gnome
for technical reasons. And KDE can't handle 800x600 in a way that
would make us happy.) The user fraction on their side were also seriously
disappointed from "Linux Windows"... because they have to mount
removables now: "But you have to admit that Windows is easier to use",
repeated by two dozen people every once a while we show up. I guess it's
psychologically important for "the man on the keyboard" not only to use
SW that makes a difference on the system level but visualize the
difference on the GUI level. This helps not to confuse apples and
pears, and also won't force us to compete with MS's featuritis.

I had pretty much the same symptoms. It happened because fetchmail
didn't know where to deliver the mail because localhost was
unknown. 'ping localhost' to see if it works. If not and you're on a
2.2 system, make sure that 'iface lo inet loopback' in
/etc/network/interfaces is not commented out, then restart the
network. Until you get fetchmail working, use 'fetchmail -kvv'
(keep the mail, be Verbose).

I use courier-imap. It's easy to set up, it works, so it's the only one
I've tried, with clear documentation by the debian maintainer on how to
get exim deliver to ~/Maildir/. Don't forget to set $MAIL, you will be
notified about new Mail in ~/Maildir/ then. Though I initially use
Maildir in my setup, I can have mbox in two ways. The first one is
save in mbox format on the server (which both mutt and exim can access),
the second move mail from the server to local mbox files. There are
some issues with Netscape, you might have to clear your cache to have
the recent mail count, and it doesn't speak Maildir; but you can
manipulate your mboxes graphically on the IMAP server with it. As for
mutt, be sure to use at least version 1.2.5i. But I haven't figured out
how to use Gnus with IMAP then.

I use mutt 1.3.15i with nntp-patch. You can get it for example at
<http://packman.links2linux.de/index.php4?action=045>, a .deb is at
<ftp://ftp.links2linux.de>. Be sure to also grab the associated perl
nntp client (see the first link), and install it for example as
"/usr/local/lib/site_perl/News/NNTPClient.pm". When you've installed the
.deb, do "chgrp mail /usr/bin/mutt_dotlock; chmod 2755
/usr/bin/mutt_dotlock" after the installation.

Use "i" to get the news. It works fine, unless you try to retrieve an
article and the connection is lost (e.g. ppp finished meanwhile). Mutt
hangs in this case and has to be killed.

mutt can do virtually everything; it'd trigger an external program for
HTML mail if needed. Cases are _very_ rare ;)

Frankly I don't know about Nsc mail format on Win32; on Linux it uses
standard mbox format, which means you don't have to convert your mail at
all; mutt (and AFAIK all others) can just use mboxes as Nsc. Just don't
let two programs/processes operate on the same mbox at a time.

The mutt manual ($4.6) states:

  MH. A radical departure from mbox and MMDF, a mailbox consists of a
  directory and each message is stored in a separate file. The filename
  indicates the message number (however, this is may not correspond to
  the message number Mutt displays). Deleted messages are renamed with a
  comma (,) prepended to the filename. Note: Mutt detects this type of
  mailbox by looking for either .mh_sequences or .xmhcache (needed to
  distinguish normal directories from MH mailboxes). Mutt does not
  update these files, yet.

apt-get install courier-imap

/usr/share/doc/courier-imap/README.Debian addresses exim (Thanks, Steve
Haslam!)

Re: wraping lines in mutt

Just to mention it, if you've set your editor to vim, "gq" command can
remap text, which works on selected text (visual) or the current line.
M-q in xemacs does the same (here).

Maybe with gpm? But I doubt whether this works in X.

Stop portmap, then rename /etc/init.d/portmap to
/etc/init.d/portmap_hidden, and it won't come up again.

(This was posted some time ago, not by me; works fine here.)

Not sure if I can help you...

Is lprng in the print dialog window's command line (/usr/bin/lpr here)?
Did you try to specify a printer explicitely (-P)?
Did you try to print to a file?
Does it work from xpdf?
Another wild guess, but why not: Try PS Level 1, specified in Acroread's
prefs, or by piping through "ps2ps -dLanguageLevel=1".

view changelogs of new packages before installing them

2001-03-18 Thread Andre Berger
Hi all,

can I view a package's changelog without having to download it first?
This would be esp. useful for intended large downloads such as
kernel-source-*; even kernel-doc-* is more than one meg to download each
time.

Check your XF86Config, make sure the 75dpi font entries appear before
the 100dpi's.

Choose your window manager in ~/.xsession. Change the last line to sth
like:

exec sawmill || rxvt -fg red

(sawmill is called sawfish nowadays).

I hope this helps.

Hmm, never used anything else than A4 myself. Isn't letter LaTeX's
standard paper size? What happen if you just use

\documentclass[12pt]{article}

If this doesn't work, correct the offset in /etc/texmf/dvips/config.ps
