No, it's not. I have that card and it works just fine with no extra drivers
needed. Just used it briefly about half an hour ago, in fact. And I do
*not* have any special drivers for it.

Unless Linksys changed the chip in midproduction, this card is a real modem.
The one I have is, at any rate. Serial number LF97142808

Like you say, some machines this is too easy to get around.

I once ran across an old DOS utility that did something like this. IIRC It
embedded itself into the bootsector and upon a certain keycombe it would
throw a serial number onto the screen and play an audio code through the
speaker (in case th monitor was no longer usable for whatever reason). You
were supposed to register the serial number with the company that produced
the utility. I think I still have the disk somewhere - I'll see if I can
locate it.

> I would appreciate any idea that could help us to increase our security.

This idea might not decrease the odds of the laptop being stolen, but it
will increase the chances of getting it back. Open up the machine and
engrave some sort of ID (driver's license number, SSN, whatever) onto a
couple of places *inside* the case. If your floppy / CDROM drives are the
easily removable type, engrave them too (carefully, please).

You have to say yes to the Prompt for development option under the Code
maturity level options menu. After doing that, a Frame-buffer submenu will be
under the Console drivers menu.

When I partitioned my drive, I used PartitionMagic. Great program, if you can
get ahold of a copy. However, I don't know if it will read linux partitions
properly, so it will only work if you don't have linux on the machine yet.

This is a little OT, but how well do XFS and reiserfs work with
laptops? I am under the impression that reiserFS does not have good
spin-down times, even when mounted with noatime and noflushd running.
As I understand it, reiserFS bypasses the kernels delayed-write
system, so noflushd has no effect. XFS does this too, I think,
although I haven't tried it. Do any of you notice this when you run
these filesystems, or is there a way to fix it? Right now I am just
using ext3 on my laptop, but I have XFS on my desktop and am really
happy with it. It 'feels' a lot faster.

Debian potato with Ximian Gnome ran on my Compaq M700 laptop for over a year. What a beautiful system and laptop. I just loved it. I had to install XFree86 4.0.1 from the www.xfree86.org website originaly to get X windows to work. With a little tweaking it ran great for over a year.
Now , like many others I am upgrading to woody and XFree86 4.1.0-14.
The installation of XFree86 4.1.0-14 just wont configure properly.  Error messages saying "it cant detect the mouse" after running XFree86 -configure. Even after editing the config file to "PS/2" and /dev/psaux , which were the settings for 4.0.1 , X wont work :(((.
After days without debian I am suffering withdrawal symptoms. I need help !

It was a joke. In your original email, you did not provide enough

Frank suggested that maybe the source of your noise was that your tea

presented, that was as good of an answer as any.

Well, all right, it was definitely outside the domain of
debian-laptop, but that was intentional in order to emphasize the lack

Fortunately it appears that subsequent messages did provide at least
some of the necessary information.

Debian on the MacBookAir3,1

Hi there,

I'm trying to get Debian to work properly on one of the new MacBookAir
machines. I've started documenting my steps so it can be of use to
someone hopefully: http://dentifrice.poivron.org/laptops/macbookair3,1/

It's a work in progress, and quite a lot of things need to be fixed
and/or figured out still, so contributions/corrections are more than
welcome!

I'd be delighted to know that some more people are trying to get Debian
running on this nice little machine.

Cheers,

I had the same problem but with 2 desktops and only 1.5 Gb of memory
each.

I dumped the Gnome desktop for Xfce https://wiki.debian.org/Xfce and got
instant relief.

Not as fancy-shmancy but works fantastic.

Takes minutes to install and no brains.

[ apt-get install xfce4 ]

[ apt-get install xfce4-goodies ]

Leaves Gnome installed and you can simply choose Xfce as the Desktop
alternative at login.

Try goobox. If that works, it means your laptop doesnt have an audio
cable between the cdrom drive and the sound card, meaning that software
has to operate as if it was ripping the CD to be able to play it.
Adjusting the "CD" volume in your volume controls will be inefficient in
such a scenario, since it adjusts the volume for that internal audio input
that is not present...
That's typical on laptops.

There's nothing you can do, a lot of laptops are made this way.
As for the "onboard" thing, that doesn't change anything about the
cabling requirement.

Mhhmhmh, I tried Ekiga there is the same problem like with skype, so
while the sound-system-check there should be a mistake... I can check
it, I can herem that my microfon should be right, (i can here myself,
when I speak into the micro) but after it, there is no response... I
should here myself at the end of the test... nothing....

FWIW, here, it's
active state:C2
max_cstate: C8
bus master activity: c8444672
states:
C1: type[C1] promotion[C2] demotion[--] latency[000]

   *C2: type[C2] promotion[--] demotion[C1] latency[001]
usage[01848151] duration[019686907116]

max_cstate is also C8, but I only have 2 C-states when on AC power, and
2 more C-states show up when on battery. I don't think you have to
worry.

ext3rminator, that you can get from

I've got the same notebook of IBM. My Ethernet information is:
Ethernet controller: 3Com Corporation 3c556B CardBus [Tornado] (rev 20)

I wantedt to install Debian-Sarge. So it ist more then a year ago :) And
it didn't work. Then I had to install Kanotoix/Knoppix (unstable). There
is was possible to get ethernet to work.
So Etch is at this moment stable, maybe it could help, to install the
testing distribution of Debian, lenny. It works fine here with me :)

Maybe this helps you, i hope. Have a nice day :D

There is tifm_ms, which will be available in kernel 2.6.25. It only
supports MemoryStick Pro, though.

There is. It's pcnetconfig, part of the pcmcia-cs package. I used it
to setup my Linksys card. As I remember - it's been a while - it's pretty
much just a shell script that walks you through the settings.

Linksys PCMLM56 not working?

2000-06-19 Thread Mike Werner

Some time back there was someone on this list that had a Linksys PCMLM56
card (combo 10/100 Ethernet and 56k modem) that they were having troubles
with. I have that same card, and am wondering if anyone has figured out how
to get it working under woody. When I was still running slink it worked
just fine, but after upgrading to woody the modem part stopped. Near as I
can tell the serial port portion of the card is just not being recognized.

I'm currently using kernel 2.2.16, pcmcia-cs 3.1.14-1 (freshly compiled just
a few hours ago). Fortunately at this point in time use of the modem is not
too terribly important, but I'd like to get it working for whenever I do
need it.

You should be able to get pcmcia-cs working as long as you don't
configure
any of the pcmcia support in the kernel. They did work at
together at one point during the 2.3.99/2.4.0 series, but I believe that
most work is aimed at getting the pcmcia internal to the kernel working.

Hmmm, you should be calling dhcp from the pcmcia scripts, my config

That's a shame, any chance you could make the changes required yourself
to bring the driver into the kernel ? I know Dave Hinds is very busy and
usually appreciates any help in this direction.

I have that card. With one slight exception it has worked very well for me.
The single exception is more the fault of the default config of the
pcmcia-cs package and not the card. Note: with slink this problem did not
yet exist - it came about with the potato pcmcia package, and I believe
still exists in the woody version.

The default config for the pcmcia package reserves certain resources for
various card types. One of those is the token ring cards. Unfortunately
the resource reserved for the token ring cards is the same as needed for the
modem portion of the Linksys card.

It is easily fixed, however. Go into the file /etc/pcmcia/config.opts Find
the section where a range of IO ports is reserved for the IBM Token Ring
cards, and comment out that line. The modem portion of the Linksys card
will then work just fine.

So, bearing in mind that you will need to do a slight modification to the
pcmcia configuration (if you are running either potato or woody) I would
certainly reccomend the PCMLM56 card as being well worth the money.

There is a nm256 driver that comes with the kernel sources, just select
the option for the oss sound modules and select the nm256 and you should
be good to go.

I've got a Z505SX with this chip and it work fine.

What does the output of lsmod look like, does it list the correct

I've also just noticed that my 505 has got the nm256AV, not the qv, if
that makes any difference.

My lsmod with sound working:

nm256
sound
soundcore

I do compile the sound as a module and just issue the modprobe nm256 to

I too got bitten by this one. Fortunately, it is a *very* easy fix. All
that needs done is open the /etc/pcmcia/config.opts in an editor, find the
lines that say:

# Extra port range for IBM Token Ring
include port 0xa00-0xaff

and comment out that second line. Restart the PCMCIA services, and the
modem should now work.

What's happening is that "include port" line is reserving that range of
ports for an IBM token ring adaptor. Unfortunately, that's the port range
that the modem portion of the Linksys card needs to use. So unless you have
a token ring card, you can safely comment out that line.

Hhmmm. I think that IO port range is the one the card was using when I
checked under Windoze. And commenting out that line did let the modem work.
The rest of that explanation I cribbed from the web site that I got the info
from. And of course now I can't find that site again. ::grumble:: Should
have bookmarked it. Ah well. For all I know I've got a couple of different
things combined in my head or some such thing.

I could well have gotten the reason why completely fouled up, but the most
important part here is that commenting out that line is what made the modem
start working again. Though if anyone here kows for sure and for certain
*why* commenting out that line lets the modem work, I would certainly be
interested to know. Even if for no other reason than mere curiosity.

Re: sony vaio laptops

2000-11-26 Thread Mike Phillips
I had a PCG-Z505S and the only thing that I didn't get working was the
WinModem, but then I had high speed connection everywhere anyway so I
never bothered trying. The 12" screen is a delight to work with, X
configures up no trouble at all. Sound is well supported now. USB may
well take some effort, but I did get it working.

The only complaint was the battery life, on the standard battery you
could may get 1.5 hours out of it is you're lucky. I don't know about
the 3x battery and I didn't have one.

Only had CD not DVD so can't comment.

Trick to installing from cd-rom, when the kernel boots append:
ide2=0x180 to the lilo boot line and the cd is available as a regular
ide device, doesn't even need pcmcia support to access it.

This machine was great when I had both the laptop and a desktop machine,
but now I'm done to one machine only I found the Sony not quite upto the
task of day to day heavy development machine and went for a full size
laptop instead (Dell Latitude CPx) which is a great machine you just
have to live with the weight.

And you can't defrag a partition when it is in use/mounted. Linux people
have generally designed the system so it doesn't need defrag, and haven't
put in the support for degrag except in extreme cases. That's why you have
to unmount before defrag...

I have a partition that is root, and has gotten to 99% and back down to
about 80% usage. Why wouldn't I want to defrag that partition?

Well, I pretty much did in my previous message. In this case the media would be
a hard drive, and depending on the cercumstatces, the target drive could be
use from then on...

The main reason that this doesn't come up very often is because it doesn't
look as easy as just running a defrag.

In this case, windows is more advanced in defragmenting because it has been
needed a _lot_ more than on unix. On windows, it is common to defrag daily
or weekly. On unix, it is common to never do it, or to have it happen to be
done yearly or so from replaced/upgraded drives.

I can think of one if you like kernel modules:

Note: I don't know pcmcia-cs

Write a script that switches the /etc/modules files based on detecting the
docking port from whatever /proc file shows it. It really won't hurt
anything to have both loaded... Do you want to change other things based on
being un/docked? Do you use dhcp in both instances, what exactly do you
want to change based on the hardware available. In your example, you'll
have ethernet on both...

Why not just eject it?

The only problem may come from eth0 pointing to the pcmcia card when the
laptop is docked, your net scripts will get confused...

If you load pcmcia last, you probably won't have trouble.

> After reinstalled win2k, I can no longer access

I don't know if this will work out of w2k, but it's worth a shot. Note this
will only work if you can boot the machine from a floppy, and if you know
the location of your root partition (/dev/hda1 etc)

- First, go to a debian mirror site, say

http://mirror.direct.ca/pub/linux/debian/dists/potato/main/disks-i386/2.2.23-2001-04-15/images-1.44/

and get the file called rescue.bin

- Head to mirror.direct.ca/pub/liunx/debian/tools and get rawrite1.zip or
rawrite2.zip (these are programs to let you do a dd from dos.)

- unpack rawrite and use it to dump the rescue.bin image onto a blank floppy.
- Reboot the machine from the floppy at the boot: prompt, type
rescue root= hit F1/F3 for help.

-Once the machine boots, mount the boot partition (if you have a seperate one),
set up your /etc/lilo.conf (if needed),invoke /sbin/lilo, and restart the
machine from the hard disk.

I use a similar method whenever my MBR gets trashed, except I have a Mandrake
CD lying around, which works along the same lines.

BTW, if you don't know the location of your root partition, and you can find
a Mandrake CD or something that works similarly, the CD has a self-contained
installation on it, allowing you to mount filesystems and determine which one's
the root.

No prob. Hope this does the trick.

APM suspend/resume problem on Toshiba Satellite 2800DVD-C302

2001-08-29 Thread Mike Alborn
Hi,
This might have been posted before, but I couldn't find it in the
archives...
I'm having trouble getting apm to work on my laptop. apm -s (suspend)
works (although slightly differently than Windows), and when I resume, the
following occurs:

* the display remains blank
* the network is down
* the system responds to the keyboard

By restarting the interface, I can get the network to respond, so I am
able to ssh in from another machine and take a look. I can manually activate the
backlight, but the screen is displaying patches of multicoloured vertical bars.
It seems that I can make a particular device work by resetting it (pcmcia,
sound, etc.,) but I have not found a way to reset the display.
BTW, I am suspending from the console.
I've played with the different kernel options for the apm module, but
they seem to be geared toward working around a machine that totally hangs; in
any case, I have had no luck changing these settings.

# uname -r
2.4.5-586 (this is the debian kernel-image-2.4.5-586 package)

apm options:
CONFIG_APM=m
CONFIG_APM_IGNORE_USER_SUSPEND is not set
CONFIG_APM_DO_ENABLE is not set
CONFIG_APM_CPU_IDLE is not set
CONFIG_APM_DISPLAY_BLANK is not set
CONFIG_APM_RTC_IS_GMT=y
CONFIG_APM_ALLOW_INTS is not set
CONFIG_APM_REAL_MODE_POWER_OFF is not set

Does anyone know of a way to fix this problem? I can provide more
information on the system, if needed.

TP 590x kernel 2.4.10 i82365 module won't insert

2001-09-28 Thread Mike Crowe
[I also sent a very similar message to the linux-thinkpad list yesterday,
apologies to anyone that sees it twice.]

I've installed Debian Potato (stable) on my Thinkpad 390X and a Xircom
PCMCIA ethernet card worked fine. I upgraded it to Woody (testing) and it
continued working until I tried to upgrade to the stock Debian 2.4.9
kernel. At that point I get:

Intel PCIC probe: not found
i82365.o: init_module: No such device

I made my own 2.4.10 kernel and get the same message when I tried to
modprobe i82365 manually.

/proc/pci contains (among other things):

Bus 0, device 3, function 0:
CardBus bridge: Texas Instruments PCI1251B (rev 0).
  IRQ 10.
Master Capable. No Bursts. Min Gnt=192.Max Lat=7.
  Non-prefetchable 32 bit memory at 0x1400 [0x14000fff].
Bus 0, device 3, function 1:
CardBus bridge: Texas Instruments PCI1251B (#2) (rev 0).
  IRQ 10.
Master Capable. No Bursts. Min Gnt=192.Max Lat=7.
  Non-prefetchable 32 bit memory at 0x2000 [0x2fff].

The machine has 320Mb of RAM.

I've done lots of google searches, looked at the archives for this list and
meddled in the BIOS to ensure that all the PCI INT[ABCD] lines were getting
unique IRQs but none of this has helped.

Has anyone got any ideas on my next best move?

TIA

The solution was to use yenta_socket rather than i82365. It appears that
there is a third type of PCMCIA chip driver that none of the documentation
mentions :-(

Everything works now. Thanks to the people who replied privately.

The only problem may come from eth0 pointing to the pcmcia card when the
laptop is docked, your net scripts will get confused...

If you load pcmcia last, you probably won't have trouble.

Re: Toshiba Satellite Pro 4200

2001-07-31 Thread Mike Alborn

Hello,

Don't know if this helps any, but I've just finished getting most of this
stuff working on a Satellite 2800, and Debian will probably have everything
you need already packaged.

If your card's any older than brand new, I'd be willing to be that it will
work fine, provided the PCMCIA support is there. Of course, I can't say for
sure without a model number (FCC lookup perhaps?) I do know that there are
drivers kernel 2.4.4 for 3Com's 574 and 589 NICs.

AFAIK, There are only two kinds of PCMCIA, and both are supported.

http://www.linmodems.org is the home of the Linux-for-winmodems project. A lot
of manufacturers have released drivers for their winmodems, and people have
hacked out others. The site had everything I needed to get my Satellite 2800's
modem up and running.

My 2800, and every other Toshiba laptop I've seen, new and old, is running a
Yamaha sound chipset (the ymfpci kernel driver). I found some specific
information for my sound card from Toshiba's website.

Re: possible to restore damaged Lilo in MBR

2001-08-14 Thread Mike Alborn

> After reinstalled win2k, I can no longer access
> my existing Linux installation. Sadly, I didn't create a boot disk.

* the display remains blank
* the network is down
* the system responds to the keyboard

CONFIG_APM=m
CONFIG_APM_IGNORE_USER_SUSPEND is not set
CONFIG_APM_DO_ENABLE is not set
CONFIG_APM_CPU_IDLE is not set
CONFIG_APM_DISPLAY_BLANK is not set
CONFIG_APM_RTC_IS_GMT=y

I have a NetgearFA111 card that gave a similar message, it turns out that I
needed to upgrade the PCMCIA-CS packages. Try grabbing the packages from
woody or sid. I copied them onto a floppy and installed them onty my laptop
from there, since I also did not have a cdrom. Dont forget to get the right
pcmcia-modules package too.

> If you need any more information, let me know. I really appreciate any
help.

When was your card made? If it's a newer model you probably need to upgrade
the packages like I said. PCMCIA cards go through revisions and they often
keep the same name, which breaks things :/ Check
http://pcmcia-cs.sourceforge.net/ftp/SUPPORTED.CARDS to see if your card is
there.

Hope that helps.

Actctualy, thats a typo on my part, it's an FA411 (i went for the cheap
one).

The FA411 isn't a cardbus card, but pcmcia-cs should still support your
card.

> What kernel version do you use?
I'm using 2.4.6 with the Mwave modem driver patch and the pre-emptible
kernel patch. any kernel above 2.4.7 had a bug with PNP that caused my
system to crash in a horrible way. Supposedly this has been fixed, but I
don't have the time to test it.

>Did you compile pcmcia support into the kernel?
No, I did not. Nor did I as a module.

>Did you pick pcmcia-cs from unstable?
Yeah, I'm using pcmcia-cs 3.1.27-1 and the module source by the same number.
which I grabbed from sid a few months ago. I've been too lazy to upgrade,
but 3.1.28, which is in sid now, should be ok. I actualy think you need .29
to get the modules to compile correctly.

I *think* I rember and error message of that sort. The version of pcmcia-cs
that comes with woody and potato was made before these cards were released,
try upgrading to the packages in sid and let me know what happens. I have a
log of my instalation somewhere, I'll dig it out for you if upgrading
dosen't work.
