Bug#419182: kiax: sound quality very poor compared to skype

2007-04-21 Thread Mikael Magnusson

[EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

Package: kiax
Version: 0.8.51.dfsg-2-1
Severity: normal

I can't figure it out. I have skype 1.3.0.53 and the sound quality for a
test call is almost crystal clear. When I try to use kiax with
iax.fwdnet.net, the sound quality is so bad as to be unusable.

Initially I suspected that I was getting poor sound quality due to
network delay so I registered two computers on my local LAN with FWD. I
called from one to the other. Now, if I understand FWD correctly, the
audio data is routed directly between the callers (not through FWD) so
this test should eliminate all network delay. Still, I found the sound
quality unchanged -- very poor. I tried GSM, speex, and ULaw. I turned
off all the audio filters and silence detection. It still sounded
terrible.

Any suggestions would be welcome. I loath to use Skype because it is
proprietary software and IAX should be superior.

When comparing the sound quality of skype and kiax you should have in
mind that skype uses a (prioprietary) wideband codec in contrast to kiax
which uses a sample rate of 8000 samples per second.

You should compare kiax to another softphones using 8k samplerate. For
example twinkle which also supports wideband speex codecs. IAX doesn't
support wideband codecs.

Bug#420254: Partman does not show partition table

Comments/Problems:

Partman displayed my hard disk correctly. I have chosen a manual
partitioning. Partman did NOT display my current partitions. Instead it
offered to create a new partition table.

I suspect partman is unable to create a logical partition in the free space
(in that particular situation).
However, I suggest handling the situation by an error message instead of
offering to create an new partition table.
An error message might say something like: strange partitioning found.
Cannot work on that.

Of course, I would like dearest that partman is able, to create logical
partitions in that situation.

Comments/Problems:

Steps / observations
1. Partman displayed my hard disk correctly.
2. I have chosen a manual partitioning.
3. Partman displayed my current partitioning.
4. I created successfully a partition in the unused space: primary 8 GB,
ext3 on /
5. Partman did not allow to create an other partition (for swap) in the rest
of the unused space.

I suspect partman is unable to create a logical partition in the free space
(in that particular situation).
(Having a good bunch of RAM, that does not hurt me to much).

2.6.21-rc7), sane-find-scanner does not find any scanner but this
scanner is shown in /proc/scsi/scsi. Both stations run lenny.

OK after a quick check, this was discussed back in january 2003.

I have seen this archive.

The Linux SG3 interface does not work properly when a 32bit app is
talking to a 64bit kernel.

Maybe. But with 2.6.20.3 kernel, on the same sparc, I can use this
scanner (with libsane that comes with sarge), but system is not stable.
I don't see any diff on sg driver between 2.6.20.3 and 2.6.21-rc7.

You can either:
 - try to do a 64bit build of sane-backends
 - try to use the old SG interface, if still exists/works

Unfortunately, both options are unfit for Debian; 64bit binaries would
require to rebuild all the dependency chain, and using the old SG
interface won't last long :/

Thus, any issue or workaround ?

JKB

Thanks for keeping an eye on that. It seems to be fixed in upstream
CVS nowadays (both in HEAD and gnutls_1_6_x branch).

OK. Except for tetex-brev, what is required to get a full latex
environment installed with texlive? At the moment we have this
section in the task:

  Suggests:tetex-bin, tetex-doc, tetex-base, tetex-extra, lacheck, \
   auctex, tetex-brev
Why: Requested by math teacher. LaTeX allow math typesetting.

What should be list instead?

No, not at the moment, I'm afraid. Can you try to run the libsane
version from sarge on the sparc and see if it still works ?

Bug#420260: spamassassin: mkdir /nonexistent: Permission denied at /usr/share/perl5/Mail/SpamAssassin.pm line 1530

2007-04-21 Thread Francesco P. Lovergine
Package: spamassassin
Version: 3.1.7-2
Severity: normal

When using spamd child processes run as 'nobody' users who has no home
dir. That causes a permission denied error in creation of bayesian
filtering files, as explained here for instance:

http://lists.debian.org/debian-user/2007/01/msg03725.html

Adding something like:

--virtual-config-dir=/var/cache/spamassassin

to OPTIONS in /etc/default/spamassassin with nobody owning that dir
would be appropriate. It would be better also creating a system spamd user
with appropriate home and shell, instead of using nobody.

Bug#420262: havp: [debconf_rewrite] Debconf templates review

2007-04-21 Thread Christian Perrier
Package: havp
Version: N/A
Severity: normal
Tags: patch

Dear Debian maintainer,

On Sunday, April 08, 2007, I notified you of the beginning of a review process
concerning debconf templates for havp.

The debian-l10n-english contributors have now reviewed these templates,
and the proposed changes are attached to this bug report.

Please review the suggested changes are suggested, and if you have any
objections, let me know in the next 3 days.

Please try to avoid uploading havp with these changes right now.

The second phase of this process will begin on Tuesday, April 24, 2007, when I
will
coordinate updates to translations of debconf templates.

The existing translators will be notified of the changes: they will
receive an updated PO file for their language.

Simultaneously, a general call for new translations will be sent to
the debian-i18n mailing list.

Both these calls for translations will request updates to be sent as
individual bug reports. That will probably trigger a lot of bug
reports against your package, but these should be easier to deal with.

The call for translation updates and new translations will run until
Sunday, May 06, 2007. Please avoid uploading a package with fixed or changed
debconf templates and/or translation updates in the meantime. Of
course, other changes are safe.

On Monday, May 07, 2007, I will contact you again and will send a final patch
summarizing all the updates (changes to debconf templates,
updates to debconf translations and new debconf translations).

Again, thanks for your attention and cooperation.

for kde4, there is a system which can determinate the language, and then pass
it to the correct spell checker. english will not be sent to hspell.

the violation of the policy is a good point. but i am pretty sure we are in
some gray area.

If you set it to wishlist, please state an explicit wish. I still
don't see what the behaviour should be in your opinion. I doubt that
people would like their clipboard gets overwritten when you select
some text somewhere (e.g. bug in terminals/X?). Same I doubt that you
want firefox to paste the mouse-selection if you press Ctrl-V (which
would be a wishlist for firefox).

Bug#420193: libsane on sparc64 with SCSI scanner

2007-04-21 Thread BERTRAND Joël

Julien BLACHE a écrit :

BERTRAND Joël <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote:

Hi,

The Linux SG3 interface does not work properly when a 32bit app is
talking to a 64bit kernel.

Maybe. But with 2.6.20.3 kernel, on the same sparc, I can use
this scanner (with libsane that comes with sarge), but system is not
stable. I don't see any diff on sg driver between 2.6.20.3 and
2.6.21-rc7.

Have you diffed the 2 libsane versions yet ? (the backend you're using
+ common code in sanei/ for a start)

No, I don't, because I have to find a couple libsane/kernel that works
on sparc64 and another that doesn't work, and I cannot reboot my U2 only
to make test.

No, not at the moment, I'm afraid. Can you try to run the libsane
version from sarge on the sparc and see if it still works ?

I have tried, but without success. I have tried 1.0.14, 1.0.16 and
1.0.18. Maybe, like mysql-server bug on sparc64, trouble comes from
glibc or dark side of kernel itself...

(I've left out the timestamp and hostname.)

In the example above the sound device is rendered unusable since it is
impossible to modprobe snd_emu10k1 manually, it will just throw the same
error messages as above. Rebooting usually fixes the problem.

I've also experienced this problem with the nvidia module, but with
snd_emu10k1 it has happened several times.

reassign #381680 gtk-qt-engine
thanks

To gtk-qt-engine maintainer: I forward this bug because I guess your
package creates the faulty file. Feel free to ask precisions about this.

If this bug still happens, it lies in gtk-qt-engine, which shouldn't
statically create a ~/.gtkrc-2.0. I have heard that it may have been
fixed upstream (kde creating a .gtkrc-2.O.kde or something like that),
but I don't really know.

Ouch! So libsane from sarge works on an older kernel, and doesn't work

(#420191), and it does not make sense to keep the docs around.

I shall check sources this evening.

No, not at the moment, I'm afraid. Can you try to run the libsane

I have tried, but without success. I have tried 1.0.14, 1.0.16

from glibc or dark side of kernel itself...

Yes. I have check kernel sources (sg tree) and the last change was made

Bug#378119: Yaboot does not boot correctly on a firewire CD drive

2007-04-21 Thread didier
IMO this one can be rejected because it's not a bug in yaboot but an
Ubuntu liveCD one. The live CD use the cd: alias, which with an external
drive rarely points to the right device.

Bug#420276: Copyright file incomplete; possibly includes non-free/undistributable data

2007-04-21 Thread Andrew Donnellan
Package: blobwars
Version: 1.06-2-1
Severity: serious

Hi,

It appears that the current copyright file is incomplete. It needs to include
a full license statement; see
http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel-announce/2003/12/msg7.html and
http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel-announce/2006/03/msg00023.html

Additionally, it seems that the music files in the package are under an unclear
license and could possibly be non-free or even undistributable.

Bug#325935: ITP: warzone2100 -- 3D realtime strategy on a future Earth

2007-04-21 Thread Petter Reinholdtsen

So, etch is released, and I've started playing warzone2100 on it.
Work like a charm, when one ignore the amount of time I have sunk into
the game so far. :)

I built the upstream version myself, and it worked out of the box. Is
there anything missing before it can be uploaded into Debian/main?

This game is very good! :)

Bug#420277: iceape: emailing attachments doesn't work (from command line/scripts)

2007-04-21 Thread Paolo
Package: iceape
Version: 1.0.8-4
Severity: important

hi,

mozilla/thunderbird used to open the msg compose window with the named file
attachd, ie

% thunderbird -compose attachment='file:///home/me/rsync.log'

would start a new msg with rsync.log in attachments list, whereas

% iceape -compose attachment='file:///home/amsis/rsyncom.log'

opens just the compose window and the attachments list is void.

That breaks sending from any apps, eg from OOo - hence the severity tag.

thanks

I don't think the bug was really in Xfce, but anyway there's no real way
to determine this now. If you think the bug is over, can you close it?
(or let me do it if you don't know how to do this).

Thanks and regards,

thanks

exo preferred applications now uses x-terminal-emulator and not
Terminal, so selecting mutt in preferred mail applications will launch
current terminal.

Can you check this in Xfce 4.4 and report success or error?

OK, looks like udev changed again... gotta love this.

Can you unplug your scanner, run udevmonitor (as root), plug it in and
send me the output ?

sudo bash -c "/usr/share/bug/xserver-xorg-core/script 3>&1"

Bug#407574: kdvi should *recommend* texlive-fonts-recommended, not *depend* on it!

2007-04-21 Thread Henk Koster
In the old version 4:3.5.5-3 kdvi recommended the now obsolete
tetex-bin. The new version 4:3.5.6-2 depends on
texlive -fonts-recommended, which also pulls in texlive-common, -base,
and -base-bin.

These dependencies may not be wanted, as in my own case where I have
already installed TeXLive2007 directly from the TUG distro in
my /usr/local/texlive/2007 tree.

I can live with kdvi *recommending* texlive package(s), but not with
*depending* on them.

Uh, it's quite a long time I don't push updates to cpufreqd...
At a first glance it looks like the governor kernel modules are not
available. Maybe a kernel update broke it? Maybe the cpufreqd init script
fails to load the necessary modules?
Can you check what cpufreq-info reports?
If you still have problems try to send me the cpufreqd log of a failing
profile switch (the full log is ok) and the output of 'sh -x
/etc/init.d/cpufreqd start'.

Thanks

7 years later, I got hit by this in one of my packages. It would have
helped if lintian gave me at least a warning about the shlibs content...

Sure there are exceptions, but on my system, there are 17 over 381
shlibs. As far as it is known to be exceptions, it's not a problem to
have the warnings there, they could even be put in lintian overrides...

Since the new upstream release 2.0.0 hit unstable yesterday, I just
thought to try it again and the annoying stripes were gone. So feel free
to close this bug, as it doesn't seem to exist anymore in 2.0.0

Again, thanks a lot for you hard work! I really apreciate it!

Have you checked that the logfile is readable for bindgraph ?
Have you checked that RRD files are indeed not created?

Ok this shows that only 5 resolutions are detected, and 1280x768 is
chosen by default for some reason. Note that you may use 'xrandr
--output VGA --mode 1024x768' to change to 1024x768 at runtime. It looks
like your old 1280x1024 is not detected here because hsync and vrefresh
are out of range.

BTW, do you use a package such as 915resolution? IIRC, it is not
required anymore since it modifies BIOS tables that are not used anymore
by the new driver.

I see that you already reported the bug at
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=10623 so I am marking this
bug as forwarded.

well.. I consider it a bug in the old versions that it was only recommends.
kdvi fails to do almost anything - especially viewing plain documents -
without having the fonts and the kpsewitch binary installed.

If you try using kdvi on a document without those things installed, you will

So kdvi needs it to work. The way to declare that in debian is by using a

well.. when you install stuff from source without telling the package managre
that you do it, you will run into all sorts of things like this.
Generally it is not supported - but you might be able to look into the equivs

Important changes that are visible to users are:

1. The Unicode property tables have been updated to Unicode 5.0.0, which adds
   some more scripts.

2. The option PCRE_NEWLINE_ANY causes PCRE to recognize any Unicode newline
   sequence as a newline.

3. The \R escape matches a single Unicode newline sequence as a single unit.

4. New features that will appear in Perl 5.10 are now in PCRE. These include

   recursion.

5. The C++ wrapper interface has been extended by the addition of a
QuoteMeta function and the ability to allow copy construction and

Bug#238237: Have grep reply with a useful error message

Wouldn't it make sense to have grep reply with

'For the reasons laid out in bug #238237, grep does not support -P.

or something along those lines? This would nicely solve the /usr
issue, not require static linking and still give the user an immediate
solution to this very unexpected problem.

Bug#420283: 915resolution: xserver-xorg-video-intel renders this package obsolete

2007-04-21 Thread Brice Goglin
Package: 915resolution
Severity: normal

Hi,

xserver-xorg-core 1.3 and xserver-xorg-video-intel 2.0 entered unstable
yesterday. It brings modesetting support by default, which means the BIOS
tables that 915resolution modifies are not used anymore.
So I guess, at least, the description of 915resolution should be updated
to say that the package is useless with xserver-xorg-video-intel.

It is the default conf file generated by packge instlal scripts.
This is Debian/GNU Linux stable, custom changes are fights for other low
quality distros.

Could you try with the "nv" driver instead? You might have to take it

You are using xserver-xorg-core 1.3.0, I guess this is the upgrade that
causes this problem, not libdrm2. The problem is probably that the
nvidia driver is not ready for this new X server. Could you try
downgrading xserver-xorg-core to testing 2:1.1.1-21?

I guess both these modules are provided by the nvidia package which is
probably incompatible with xserver-xorg-core 1.3.

So, if you want DRI and don't care about using an ugly binary driver,
try downgrading xserver-xorg-core to testing. If you don't need DRI,
just drop the nvidia driver and use the nv one (from experimental for
now, will be in unstable in a couple days).

Next step will probably be to reassign this bug to the nvidia driver and
pray...

Hello,

thanks for maintaining mapnik.

The description of mapnik-utils says:

It doesn't say, however, what these utilities do. This makes it
impossible to use the description to answer basic questions such as
"what can I do with this?" and "is this something I could use?".

Bug#420287: cdbs: error in ant.mk: does not work

2007-04-21 Thread Torsten Werner
Package: cdbs
Version: 0.4.48
Severity: normal

Hi,

ant.mk from cdbs calls ant in a different way than /usr/bin/ant. The
target in build.xml works when calling /usr/bin/ant directly
after installing the package ant-optional but it fails when using cdbs:

/home/twerner/debian/build-area/ilf-1.5.0/build.xml:18: Could not create task
or type of type: symlink.

Ant could not find the task or a class this task relies upon.

This is common and has a number of causes; the usual
solutions are to read the manual pages then download and
install needed JAR files, or fix the build file:
 - You have misspelt 'symlink'.
   Fix: check your spelling.
 - The task needs an external JAR file to execute
and this is not found at the right place in the classpath.
Fix: check the documentation for dependencies.
   Fix: declare the task.
...

This is the same error message when ant-optional is not installed.

Cheers,
Torsten

This is probably upstream bug

It is already fixed and will be for the next release of this driver.

To be sure, could you send the output of
/usr/share/bug/xserver-xorg/script 3>&1
AFTER the crash (without restarting the X server) so that we see your
config and the backtrace of the crash and the end of Xorg.0.log?

I'm think you're right, While I upgraded libdrm, I upgraded
xserver-xorg-core too. I reported this bug in libdrm only due to the
changelog read in this package thinking something about the permissions
changes from 660 to 666.

it's not a kernel misconfiguration nor a module loading problem, you have
all the governors available

doh! this is not good at all...
to get a meaningful cpufreqd log just run it in the foreground and pipe it
through 'tee':
cpufreqd -d -V7 | tee cpufreqd.log

and send me the resulting cpufreqd.log file

Yes. The package build fails, if xsltproc is not available.

FYI: The package is waiting to be uploaded by my sponsor and available

Bug#414034: xserver-xorg-video-i810-modesetting: dpkg-reconfigure doesn't detect correct video modes

Hi Herman,

What's the status of this bug now that xserver-xorg-core 1.3 and
xserver-xorg-video-intel 2.0 are in unstable? Correct video modes are
detected but 1280x800 is not chosen by default?

About the suspend/resume problem, it is unrelated (and should not be
discussed here) and might be similar to #390913. The kernel oops is a
kernel problem, possibly related to the suspend2 patch.
