Stus-List for Bev Parslow and Jib Sheet Question

2016-04-10 Thread Barbara L. Hickson via CnC-List
Bev, a good rule of thumb for length of most jib sheets is 1 and 1/2  to 1
and 2/3rds of the boat length. Mauri Pro Sailing and Annapolis Performance
Sailing both have great rig calculators to help with purchasing lines.  You can
measure the diameter of your present sheet considering the line may be thicker
due to wear.  The diameter of sheets depends on their working load strength,
andwhether they will work with any present clutches or self-tailers. Beyond
that, its up to your preference for your type of sailing. If you'd like advice
on what to get and how much, it would be helpful for the list to know your boat
length and what kind of sailing you do?

Stus-List Keel bolt weeping

2016-09-19 Thread Barbara L. Hickson via CnC-List
Hi Listers,  I'm having trouble searching the archives for info on the
possible repair scenarios for a keel bolt seeping seawater.  It's not much,
just slightly weeping.  I know this has been written about extensively but not
finding it on this forum.  The worst case scenario is the keel must be dropped
and rebedded and I know someone on the list has done this before.  What is the
bedding compound of choice?  Is there any other, as in cheaper, scenario that's
viable?  The tops of the bolts and their nuts look in good shape and there's no
rust/corrosion on what I can see.  It's the part that I can't see that I'm
nervous about. I will get the boat hauled to better check it out and look at
the options, but considering her age (she turns 40 next month), have to
consider the options. I don't have the pockets to get emotional about this. One
of us weeping is plenty! Thanks for your help.  Barbara L. HicksonFlight Risk,

Stus-List Bermuda and the Americas Cup races

2017-07-31 Thread Barbara L. Hickson via CnC-List
Hi all, have not been on post for awhile. Sailed to Bermuda to meet an online
date, that's another story, the man keeps his Gulfstar ketch on mooring in
Cotuit MA. and since home, I've been relishing  the benefits of a better
sailing boat where I can make decisions (even if my C&C is only 33'). If it
weren't for my input, we would have landed in Montauk coming back. Great trip
tho. Bermuda has changed very little in the 20 years since my last sail there.
The popular spots are more touristy but still plenty of off track good watering
holes. Saw a pilot whale coming back, very close to the boat. Crown jewel of
the trip. The races were good, very exciting to be so close to Oracle and that
other boat. Tried to find Rick Brass, who I saw from the passage list was
going, but the captain and crew were not very socialable and that's an
understatement. New Englanders, I was told, have a far different attitude. They
threw trash into the ocean. 😔. Even tho I won't be seeing them again, I'm glad
I went and now I know and it only took 3 weeks!  Americas Cup was a bucket list
✅. All is good down here in the south land, and the daily subtropical rain
pattern should be letting up on a few weeks. That's all for now. As you were!
😊💪Haha!  Barbara Hickson "Flight Risk" 33-1Charleston SC

Re: Stus-List Re-routing cockpit drain lines

2017-08-01 Thread Barbara L. Hickson via CnC-List
On my '76 33-1, the cockpit drains into thru hulls with inline ball valves in a
y configuration below the cockpit floor and then straight down thru the hull,
well beneath the waterline. It appears from line drawings that this is the only
practical configuration. If the drains were rerouted to either side of the hull
or to the stern above the waterline, there would a) not be enough slope, and b)
the outlets would allow water back into the cockpit when heeling or with a
following wave. Has anyone done this, or am I correct in my assessment?  Has
anyone used marelon replacement flanged seacocks?  Their video says they are to
be screwed only to a backing plate and not screwed all the way thru the hull.
Seems like a good solution if it works. Thx for any input. Barbara

Hi,

You should take a look at the lines and check for cracks in the Racor
housing..  My engine developed loss of power / stalling issues last year
and it was related to an air leak, once we started looking at the fuel
system in details we found issues everywhere.

I'm not kidding. My lift pump was tired, the fuel hoses had small cracks,
there was a problem with the one-way valve at the tank (Not needed, I just
removed that), and even my Racor housing was cracked so I replaced
everything: the lines, the Racor and housing/mounting, the lift pump, the
one way valve was removed, all is fresh from the tank to the block and the
engine runs fine  / the cold starts are much quicker.

Good luck with it.

John,

Wally?s site is a wonderful guide and inspiration.  There are several other
Landfall 38 owners who have insightful blogs: RainDays, Raft, VioletHour; are
just the first few which come up on a google search.

I have recently done much of the same refits on my boat.  Below is a direct

Hello everyone

I am about to begin a complete refit on what is the best boat  for my purpose (
sailing around Cape Code as we get ready to do the Caribbean 1500 in 2019),
after looking or sailing at least 100 boat over the past 4 years. The boat is
in better than average condition, I will post pictures later.

I have the work broken down into three categories, and would appreciate any
recommendations and reorganizing of the list.

Thanks

Unfortunately I suffered a heart attack @ 2.5 years ago and haven?t had the
time to dedicate to my C&C and I need to part ways with it.  I?m willing to
part with her and not looking for much in return.  She has a full load of sails
in very good condition.  She?s not been sailed since the heart attack or had
much maintenance.  I?ve had the hull cleaned (diver) a few times and her
topside washed but having difficult finding someone to wash again and she needs
her hull cleaned again.  She?s a moored vessel at Port of Brownsville Marina,
Bremerton, WA.  A very nice and very reasonable priced marina, you can see it
on Google Earth.  She also has a 8HP diesel that hasn?t been started since the
heart attack.

I have title in hand and will consider any reasonable offer.  I don?t have a
trailer for the C&C or she?d be out of the water.  She?s currently moored at
A-48 and the office is open daily 7 days a week.  I can meet anyone who wants
to see her.

My Barient 27?s are developing a lot of play.  The aluminum drums wearing badly
(the inside, not the outside).

The rest of the winches are in great shape, gears, bearings, pawls.  I was
wondering if anyone on the group has ever tried having a machine shop bore out
the interior of the drum to accept a sleeve of aluminum or oilite bronze. I
contacted Hutton Winches in Australia and they told me they do this service for
$400/drum. Obviously, shipping 2 large winches to Australia and back would be
out of the question.

Anyone had this done at a local machine shop?

I had issues with my alloy Barlows and Barients.

Issue 1 - the pawl receptacle was wallowing out.  That caused the pawls to
stick or to partially exit the receptacle.  Bad!  I took them to a
machinist who was interested in all things boating.  He declined to touch
them.  He could have filled the rebored the pawl holes.

Issue 2 - I had some teeth break off the inside of the drum.  I took the
drum to a machine shop where they filled then recut the teeth.  $200.

My ultimate solution was to replace ALL 6 of the alloy winches with chrome
bronze and stainless winches off eBay and Craiglist List.  2 stainless
Barient 22's, 2 chrome Barlow 28's and 2 chrome Barlow 26's for $1100 total
plus  some shipping.

In my opinion, alloy winches have a limited service life.  I would check
eBay often to upgrade to chrome bronze or stainless.  Chrome and stainless
winches look great and improve the "pier appeal" of your boat.

To search Craigslist and local classifieds, use claz.org or yakaz.com.

Stus-List Holy Crap

2018-07-24 Thread Barbara L. Hickson via CnC-List
Question:  with about this long a boat at 62’ listed, with a shallow draft as
this one apparently is, would you expect it to sail well to weather?  In my
limited opinion, I thought the deeper the keel, a fin keel, the better it would
go. Am I wrong on this?  I sailed and lived aboard a Bowman 47 that had an 8’
sweptaway fin keel that sailed like a dream so maybe I’m fixated on that. It
seems like lots of larger boats have shallow drafts to allow them access to
shallow water but wouldn’t they be unlikely to sail closer to the wind?  My C&C
33 has a 5’6” draft. She sails great to weather, 15-20 degrees off wind
regularly. What do y’all think?

Hi Jack, I hope you’re doing well (and everyone else on the list!). I bought
Flight Risk (1976 33-1 Hull no 145) in 2009. Berthed at Charleston City Marina,
Charleston Yacht Club. I’m  her 3rd owner. Bought her from my sister in law’s
brother in Deale,MD and sailed her to Savannah and subsequently to Charleston.
Original name was Hot Box and then Delaney. Previous owner kept the name
Delaney. Has original Atomic 4 which runs great, is quiet and easy to work on.
She’s a lovely boat and gets compliments all the time. They don’t make them
like her any more. Barbara L. HicksonCharleston, SC

My C&C love affair started in 2000.  I joined the crew of Bill Dingwell?s
?Zoomer? a ?78 C&C 40? deep keel with an impressive race history in New England
.  Our main sail trimmer was Rob Ball.  We bought our first C&C in 2001, Half
Magic, a ?74 25 Mk 1 as the 3rd owner.  It served our family for 14 years,
mostly day sailing and cruising with a race here and there until our two
children with the occasional friend and a large yellow lab made for rather
crowded accommodations for weekend cruising.  We bought our new Half Magic, an
?83 Landfall 35 in Jan 2016 and again I?m the 3rd owner.  After Zoomer sold, I
rejoined Rob for racing as crew on his Etchells and we worked together at Edson
for quite a few years.  At no time did I consider replacing the 25 with
anything other than another C&C.  Maybe it?s the lines of the boat, maybe the
build quality, or perhaps Rob?s influence as a friend and sailing buddy or a
combination of all of the above.

Just an FYI, after acquiring his 34, Rob?s Etchells is now on the market and is
a spectacularly great deal given the time, money,  and effort he?s put into the
boat.. Someone on the list should snap it up!

Anyone going to Annapolis for the Boat Show this week?  I?ll be down there
walking the show on Thursday and Friday, supporting a few of my Novabraid
dealers.  Hit me up off list if anyone wants to catch up and talk boats.

Cheers,

The install is pretty straightforward.  First off the biggest advantage to
this system is that it uses some type of capacitance to detect level.
Similar to the way our smartphones detect touch.  The sensors are
completely external to the tank and simply adhere to the outside.  This
means NO LEAKS.  They are comprised of 2 aluminum tape (metal duct tape)
strips installed in parallel on any side besides the top or bottom.  They
run from the top of the tank to the bottom in a vertical fashion.  As the
level in the tank rises the liquid capacitively couples more signal between
the two vertical strips.  This is processed into an output number and then
the user calibrates the specific number to a percentage of level during
installation/setup.  You choose different calibration intervals for ease
and accuracy.  Either a 2 point (full/empty), 5 point (25% increments), or
11 point (10% increments).  An 11 point calibration provides the best
accuracy for odd shaped tanks with sloping or curved sides.

Besides adhering aluminum tape to the side of the tank, a sensor unit with
2 pads gets adhered to the tank.  One pad to each tape strip.  The sensor
is a 4 wire device which has a short pig tail.  A user supplied cable needs
to be routed and connected between the head unit and the sensor.  A
template is provided for cutting the appropriate hole to mount the head
unit.  Then a 12v supply is required.  Then calibrate by filling the tank
to known volumes.  Overall pretty simple.

The aluminum tape strips won't work on metal tanks so the company provides
dip tube style sensors which can be installed instead.  The 37+ has a metal
fuel tank and a metal water tank in the v-birth.

The company also has an option for propane tanks (or any other tank) which
are already equipped with a 0 to 300 ohm output.  Just wire it up and
calibrate.  The head unit can accommodate 8 tanks. Fuel, water, sewage,
propane, etc.

Re: Stus-List Masthead sheave replacement

2016-10-21 Thread Barbara L. Hickson via CnC-List
My boat's on the hard prefacing a Matthew haulout.  While she's out, she's due
for some bottom work and thruhull replacement.  I'm going to replace the main
and jib halyard sheaves at the masthead while she's out of the water, and while
I know it's easier to replace them with the mast stepped, that's not going to
happen this time around.  That being said, can anyone here help inform me as to
what I have to do to get the sheaves out once I'm up the mast? Can't find any
good info online about this procedure for a 33-1.  I have seen that there are
pins that look like rivets on one side of the mast that hold the sheaves in
place.  If I can get the pins out with a punch/chisel and don't lose the
sheaves inside the mast, what else do I need to think about?  I have spare
halyards to go aloft so there wont' be tension on said main and jib halyards.
What tools do I need?  Thought I would block the holes in the sheave block to
keep them from falling down inside the mast.  Any thoughts much appreciated.

You should talk to Doyle Boston Sailmakers in Sarnia. They have done a lot of
work for me over the years, including re-cutting and re-sizing, as well as a
brand  new Dacron genoa. Not the cheapest option for new sails, but they are
the go-to guys for the racers around here and they just might be able to
breathe some new life into your baffed out old main. Full battens in a main can
work wonders in light air. Or they might not, but they will tell you if you
take the sail there. They are located close to the Bluewater Bridge and the
Sarnia Yacht Club.

Now the seals are a little bit different story.  They could contract in
accordance with the normally expected properties of other normal
substances.  Naturally this could cause leaks.  I was thinking that the
fear was frozen liquid expanding, causing a cracked lens.

I think you?ll find the consensus of advice to be ?Don?t do it.?

The hull to deck joint and toe rail on the older C&Cs is a pretty well
engineered setup that will last a lifetime. There are several  hundred of us on
the list, and I suspect the number who have had leaks in the toe rail or hull
to deck join is near single digits.

Basically the joint (from bottom to  top) is as follows: Inward facing flange
on the hull, layer of butyl, rubber rub rail riveted to the hull flange,
another layer of butyl, the deck, another layer of butyl, the toe rail, then it
is all through bolted with stainless oval head machine screws. My 25 has screws
every 6? (IIRC) and my 38 is bolted every 4?. Removing the bolts and toe rail
can possibly compromise every layer of the seal.

If you have an owners? manual (or buy one from the Photo Album website) you can
see a cross section of the joint.

In almost all cases the recommended fix for a leak (which seem to mostly be
around the machine screws) is to tighten the through bolts about ? to a full
turn, and apply Captain Tolley?s Creeping Crack Cure to the inside edge of the
toe rail to deck joint.

Tightening the bolts is a two man job ? the person on top holds the screw in
place so it does not turn (which breaks the seal of the butyl and can result in
a leak) while the person below tightens the nut a bit. Be careful not to
overtighten the nut because you can squeeze all of the butyl out of the joint.

Stus-List Wire to rope sheaves

2020-03-12 Thread Barbara L. Hickson via CnC-List
Went to all rope halyards in 2017 and changed out masthead sheaves at the same
time. Zephyrworks was great for making new sheaves. The old v-based wire to
rope sheaves would have made a mess of new all rope halyards. The new sheaves
work great.

I agree that a SS option would be better. One of mine appears to be the
newer style, but I admit that this is one area of the boat I have not
inspected closely at all. I do plan to replace the ports and hatch lenses
at some point in the future, if we don't find another boat first... Saw a
very nice Tayana 48 anchored beside us yesterday. Wasn't sure what it was
so I took a photo and found it online, since I didn't get a chance to say
hello to the owners. A bit out of league for now though, but one has to
have dreams...

Human Age?

How about the oldest and youngest of the C&C era vessel?  That would be an
interesting honor.

Regarding age spans, the limits are less meaning full.  For example, the
local amateur

radio club has about the same 35 - 86 limits, but mean of the distribution
is

likely 70.  On the other hand, the age spread of our clubs Viper fleet is
about 16 - 68,

with an average age in the 20s.

56 here.  Between sailing and flying I sometimes think I will be perpetually
the youngest person doing it, neither seems to get much new blood.
Glad to see a 35 year-old on the list!
Speaking of age, a broker told me C&C owners were terrible customers. He said
something like ?Most people trade up every 3 to 5 years, you all keep boats for
generations?

Yeah we may covet the non maintenance of stainless down here in the south but
we are heat avoidant.

Some boats can look good with hull windows, and properly engineered they
should not be a strength factor in the hull.

Some boats look hideous with hull windows, and look like the boat will fold
on the dotted line.

Bev:

Given that you started off with ?Just doing the teak handrails,? I assume
that your interest is limited to ?how? and not ?whether.?  If you are
considering going to stainless, I have done so on two boats and have been very
pleased.  However: a) stainless (although stronger and maintenance free) can be
a little slippery when wet; and b) despite Herculean template efforts, we were
never able to get the bolts on the replacement rails lined up perfectly with
the old bolts holes, so some filling and drilling was required.  On my 34, the
handrail came with bolts welded in place, so we could see where the holes
needed to go (they still needed to be oversized for some installation ?play?).
On my current boat, the handrail design had changed, and the ?feet? have nuts
welded in place (so you use regular bolts from the inside).  To deal with this,
I screwed some small pieces of threaded rod into the feet so I could determine
where the bolt holes should go.  In addition, the heat of welding the nuts in
place can distort threads, and Whitewater Marine did not re-tap the threads on
the feet as they should have.  As a result, we broke off two bolts on my
current boat before we figured out what was going on.  In short, going to
stainless will likely be more of a project, but they?re very strong,
maintenance free, and you?ll only do it once.

If you are only concerned about whether or not to epoxy, my understanding
is that if water gets into epoxy-entombed wood, the wood can rot from the
inside without fair warning.  Probably better to go with a UV-protectant
varnish which, unlike with stainless, you will be doing again someday.

    Good luck.

Stus-List C&C as offshore boat

2019-04-24 Thread Barbara L. Hickson via CnC-List

I

I’ve always read that all C&Cs were “coastal cruisers”.  The odd boat that
lands in New Zealand or the Med were lucky with weather windows but I
personally would not bank on traveling the world in any of them. Too light in
build compared to other true offshore boats. I sailed to Bermuda to Brazil thru
the  Caribbean in a British built Bowman and never felt safer even in 50 mph
gales. Would never do that in my 33. Great boat tho and have sailed her from
Savannah to the  Chesapeake and back. Sent from Yahoo Mail for iPhone

Shawn,

I'm still lurking here.  My 35-3, a 37, Impromptu, and Rick's LF 38 have
all been to Bermuda.  Personally, I consider 35 the minimum for offshore,
but obviously, others have different standards.

Never saw winds over 30 (on the return) and never felt unsafe.

We loved our stay at Kevin and Lisa’s house. Communication was excellent. They
even checked in with us a couple of times during our stay to see how we were
doing and if we needed anything. The spacious house is located a block from the
main street in White Salmon. It’s very nicely decorated, beds are comfortable
as is the whole house. We would definitely stay here again. White Salmon is a
tiny town but with some great food. Make sure you visit the local bakery!

Sarah’s private feedback for you:

“We loved our stay! Thank you for being so communicative hosts. Great house,
great location, really nice design, and and very comfortable! Given your
attention to detail, there are a couple of things you might like to know... the
pots and pans are in a bit of disarray. The single skillet which has a
non-stick surface, was pretty scratched up. Only one pot had a lid that fit,
the other lids were kind of random and one was broken. Some of the pots also
not super clean. Also, the utensil drawer was kind of dirty. Otherwise the
house was spotless, and these observations are just for you.”
