Short answer is Yes we do.

Have your email client organize incoming mail into folders using rules. I use
outlook and anything with Stubs List, Frees List, etch ... goes into folder
called mail lists rather than to inbox

Sams Club had their private label golf carts for $89 each. Like their AGMs, I
think they are Dekas.
I will one day switch to golf carts when I figure out how to mount them. They
will not fit where I have my batteries now. One nice thing about them is abuse
is not instant death. Mild overcharging can be fixed with water and mild
undercharging will resolve with equalization. Gels never get better once abused.

Re: Stus-List Mast Sensor

2018-04-06 Thread John and Maryann Read via CnC-List
Hi Alan

Had similar issue on my Horizon WS150. Hopefully my fix can help you. My
biggest issue is these parts are no longer available and was reluctant to get a
whole new system.

Easily disassembled – remove vane, then top is just friction fit with o-ring
seals to main body to access circuit board. While the board is not
serviceable, my issue was the wires are extremely thin and the solder
connections failed / in process of failing. Most likely cause is corrosion
over many years. Used electronics pencil solder iron to carefully resolder.
Reassemble. Works perfectly.

Re: Stus-List Marine Batteries (Dreuge)

2018-04-06 Thread Marek Dziedzic via CnC-List
There is a bunch of write-ups on marine batteries at Maine Sail’s website.
Including some recommendations regarding the manufacturers and also how many
cycles (discharge/charge) you can expect from some of them.

If I recall correctly, the golf cart batteries have heavier plates (more lead)
are deeper (hence they may not fit in all battery lockers, but have more
electrolyte over the plates so even some serious heeling does not affect them)
and can sustain substantially more cycles than just about anything else. But
they require some modifications to your set-up and usually they are more
expensive.

Re: Stus-List Mast Sensor

Yes, send it to Ray Marine and they'll fix it, flat rate of $125 or $150 I
think.

We did ours last summer and it came back in a few days with new internals.
(And some tool marks on the housing)

You start the repair process on their website and they'll issue a repair
number, ship it in and you're done.

Hey guys,

It is little wonder people get frustrated and
leave when this list looks more like a chat line
then a problem solving, albeit somewhat humourous
at times (damn, I miss those days). As an old
codger I can say the quality of discussion
degraded when people started getting their email
message (and replying) on the G*d damn phones.

Anyhow, to the point. The subject line needs to
be change when you drift away from the main thread content.

And if your email client puts [EXTERNAL] or
something like that in the subject line then
please strip that as it screws up a "sort by
subject" action... but bless you for checking the list during work hours :)

Below is an example of a badly presented reply
that needs to be cleaned before being sent. It is
not meant to single out Rod. (note phone source, like, who cares?).

Best regards, Russ

Re: Stus-List Partnership creation

2018-04-06 Thread DON JONSSON via CnC-List
Last year I took on a partner on my boat. We had known each other for several
years but were not what I would consider really close friends at that point.

We spent some time writing up an agreement in which we tried to cover all the
issues that we thought could arise in a partnership. This helped us understand
each other's expectations a valuable process where we were able to establish
that we were compatible in that regard. We also defined how the partnership
could be terminated if one partner wanted out.

Since taking on the partner we put in a new motor, added an electric windlass
and installed a fridge. And of course all the other things the need doing on
an older boat. All of this with no hard words.

I now consider my partner a close friend and feel the partnership has been a
great success.

For me an important consideration in wanting a partner was that my wife and I
did not want to feel guilty if we didn't use the boat for a summer, but did
something else. A boat needs to be used. It also cuts the workload in half
plus makes the chores more enjoyable. And of course it cuts the costs in half.
But it was mostly about not feeling obligated to going sailing all the time.

Yes — speaking from personal experience, DON’T DO IT!!! If you try to do it
with a friend, there’s a good chance it’ll wreck the friendship. If you do it
with people you don’t consider friends or don’t know much about, anything could
happen to the boat.

2018-04-06 Thread Della Barba, Joe via CnC-List
You have 3 issues. One is physical space. They are wet cells, so they need to
fit into battery containers and those containers need to fit into the boat. The
second is electrical. They take different charging voltages than the AGMs or
gels they might be replacing and they need equalizing every so often, so your
charging setup must be able to accommodate that. Trojan has some pretty good
docs here (http://www.trojanbattery.com/tech-support/battery-maintenance/) Bulk
voltage for them and I would assume most other golf cart types is 14.8 volts.
This is a lot higher than gel or AGM require. They float at 13.5, which is
lower than usual. Equalize is 16.2 volts. The third issue is self-discharge.
Unlike gel/agm that have very low self discharge, wet cells can lose up to 10%
per month. If you are on a mooring or otherwise have no shorepower, you will
really need a solar panel to keep them topped up.

There is a 4th issue too for wet cell batteries.

While AGMs and Gels have more options for orienting the batteries in your box,
wet cell battery orientation matters in sailboats. One should orient the
batteries artwartship (i.e. the long end of the battery turned beam to beam) as
apposed to parallel to the boats centerline. You will kill your batteries much
sooner while healing if your wet cell batteries are along the centerline. This
is because the wet cells that make up the battery are longer along the battery
width and short along the battery length, so a heeled battery has more exposed
lead plates if its along the centerline. It's like running your batteries low
on water.

Hi Fred,

From the info I found they differ in weight by 1.5 lbs or about 2%(62 vs 60.5).
This is actually smaller than the 4% difference in A*hr capacity.

The 4th issue might not be applicable for most of us.

From the Trojan FAC section:
3. How far can I tilt my batteries?
For flooded batteries, 22 degrees from vertical is the maximum
recommended tilt. AGM and Gel batteries can be operated vertically or
horizontally.

I rarely sail at over 22 degrees heel.
A C&C is losing ground at 25 degrees heel, according to "Pointing &

5th issue - your sore back.

Individual 70 pound or so GC2s are WAY easier to move around than a 4D or 8D
battery that weighs as much as both of them combined or pretty close. I used
to pick up 130 pound batteries and carry them around. Now.I would rather
not!

Along those lines, 3 group 24s fit sideways in an 8D battery box and have
about same AH overall.

The golf cart batteries have more space above the plates, so the effect of

The anti slime bit. I find that if you can stop the slime then you
significantly reduce the amount of other growth that occurs, hard or otherwise.
I agree that there's likely very little difference in the paint other than
that, but if you're expecting to get SR60 or similar, you're going to be
disappointed and to bear that in mind when deciding to get the work done up

Paul, Canadian paints are very similar to US paints except for the anti-slime
additives. Most use copper in the formulations. What do you think is missing?

The CSR yard in Des Moines is even closer. But, I can save 25-30% due to
exchange rate and no sales tax. Also, there’s a super Yanmar mechanic that I
want to do some work.

Stus-List Hatches and Vent fans.

2018-04-06 Thread Brien Sadler via CnC-List

I have a 35-3 and my solar vent fan is though my forward hatch. Have any 35-3
owners put their solar vent fan through the deck, possibly into the head and do
you have pictures? I’m considering moving mine since I’d like more natural
light coming in the v-berth. In addition all my hatches have the spider cracks
in them has anyone replaced their acrylic with Plexi, sent their hatches to
Select Plastics in Norwalk, CT to be refurbed or replaced them all together
with Bomar or Lewmar hatches? I’m interested in everyone’s opinions and
experience.

Acrylic and plexiglass are the same thing. If you are handy, you can make
new lenses by using the old ones and a pattern bit on a router to make new
ones. Thats's what I did. My solar fan is in the hatch in the main
cabin. Works well there.

Absolutely, I would use Trinidad SR if I could get it, but I can't. The
haulout contract (if I remember correctly) stipulates that you will use

Re: Stus-List Hatches and Vent fans.

2018-04-06 Thread Josh Muckley via CnC-List
IMO, solar fans in the hatch are preferred to any in the deck. The deck is
potentially structural and at least creates an additional path for water
ingress, wet core, rot...

You can install a solar vent fan in the hatch pretty simply by making off a
hole and cutting out with a scroll saw. Keep just slightly inside of the
line and then use a sanding drum and drill to do the final friction fit and
edge dressing. No need to remove the hatch or the lens.
