Re: Stus-List Aluminum coating

2014-06-30 Thread Rick Brass via CnC-List
I reprinted my pedestal circa 208 or 2009 when I was replacing the idler
sheaves that are mounted on the plate below the cockpit sole. I did it off the
boat and my pedestal is white (so less heat to impact the paint) but I have
been pleased with the result and no current indication of decay in the finish.

Since I had to remove the idler plate and all the wiring and cables, I took the
pedestal home to work on it in the shop. Sanded the old surface with something
like 120 grit to remove the loose powder coat and give some tooth for the
paint. Primed with Rustoleum primer (think it was zinc chromate) and painted 3
or 4 coats of off white Rustoleum satin finish paint (2 cans worth IIRC).

Now that I have said I'm pleased and the paint is lasting well, I expect to go
to the boat and find it suddenly and unexpectedly flaking off. Oh well, just
another project to add to the list. It is a boat, after all.

Re: Stus-List Aluminum coating

2014-06-30 Thread Bill Coleman via CnC-List
I am guessing they stripped the old ones with an acidic process, and it left
the surface rough.
I would have been better off sanding them all down instead of having them
strip them.
People in the plating business don't recommend black anodizing, because it
does not last near as long as the natural color, which is, well, the natural
color of aluminum.
What I did do to them, is coat them with PPG Strataclear,(Hard automotive
Clear Coat) which I used on the cabintop and areas of the deck not non-skid.
This is still holding up well and looks better than as anodized. I think if
you used a clear coating on a black paint, you would get much longer life.
I also did a test with the Strataclear over varnished teak around my
companionway, it is still great after 9 years. I am not sure why I don't do
that on all my teak. It just seems too good to be true. . . .

I had my pedestal and pedestal guard feet (two cast aluminum blocks at the
base of the guard) done last year by powder coating.

I can confirm that on the feet, there was issue with the baking process.
The end result is as if small bubbles of air were burst near the surface of
the aluminum, producing a few patches of crater-filled landscape. The
defect is very noticeable up close, but since I have reinstalled them I
never noticed.

When time comes to refinish the stanchions feet, I will avoid powder
coating. I was leaning toward re-anodization. Bill, any reason it came out
coarse?

Stus-List Aluminum coating

2014-06-30 Thread Jean-Francois J Rivard via CnC-List

After doing some research on that I decide to use the Birchwood Super
Black Gun Touch Up Pen. It is a paint pen specifically designed to touch-up
anodizing on guns and it does a wonderful job on aluminum. I've used it on
the toe rail and on the eye for the stern dock lines.

I bought it on Amazon for a few bucks here:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004WHANTA/ref=oh_details_o08_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Some people use a heavy duty marker but I was afraid it would run making
indelible zebra stripes on the topsides..

It blends in almost perfect, is surprisingly resistant to abrasion, and
does not run at all.. Being at the stern that area is pretty much is the
main drain for my decks and the worst offender for zebra stripes when the
decks are dirty, after 2 months or so it's still spotless.

Sending my toe rails out for re-anodizing was completely out of the
question as they are fastened by being sandwiched between the hull and the
deck using the deck / hull adhesive and attachment screws as anchor.

Painted my black pedestal white using Brightside Matterhorn White in 2002. I
have two small chips after all these years, but easily painted when I get
around to it. Other prioities.

I think any good quality paint by Interlux or even Rustoleum will work well as
long as you prep the metal first by sanding to remove old loose paint, prep any
bare spots w the etching primer and paint following the directions of the stuff
you are using.

Re: Stus-List pointing problem

2014-06-30 Thread Chuck S via CnC-List
Hi David,
Curious why your complaint of pointing seems focused on the rig?
What is your tacking angle? It should be 90 degrees or less.
Write down your compass headings on each tack next time sailing and see what
angles you are actually sailing?
How far from center is the helm? How many spokes from center do you need on the
wheel? Ours is typically one spoke from center but as we get powered up and
overpowered, it may be two spokes. More than that and we adjust sails, flatten
the sails or drop the traveller or shorten sail.

Assuming you have good boat speed we can rule out the bottom but be aware to
win races, you need to have a better bottom than the fleet. Just saying. If
they are burnishing their bottom, you have to also.

Things you can always improve on:
Sail trim, steering to telltales, heel angle, crew on the rail? Are you
steering as high as your telltales allow? Are you playing the windshifts? Did
you copy the 35 MkIII ahead of you? Are you pinching? Are you heeling more than
the competitors? Are the other boats better prepped? Are your Keel and rudder
foils in good shape; properly foiled and faired smooth? Are the competition's
sails in better condition? Is your prop feathered or folded and shaft locked?

There are some excellent books and videos on sail trim and racing strategies I
can recommend?

Bill, any reason it came out
coarse?

Re: Stus-List Aluminum coating

2014-06-30 Thread Graham Collins via CnC-List
I just had mine powder coated, no issues. And the Edson instructions
Steven cited say the pedestals are powder coated. So I think those
fears are unfounded.

Previous boat - I had the pedestal Awlgrip'd, it came out well but I
chipped the damn paint while installing it. Powder coating was 1/2 the
price I paid for the Awlgrip job, and looks good so far.

Re: Stus-List pointing problem

2014-06-30 Thread Dennis C. via CnC-List
Might also want to note the difference in course over ground on each tack.
Comparing the tacking angle (heading) vs tacking angle (course made good)
may indicate show excessive leeway. That may indicate sails trimmed too
much, excess heel, etc.

I don't have a good feel for an acceptable leeway for a 35-3 in those
conditions. I'm guessing 5-7 degrees low of course steered???

Another option if you decide to remove the pedestal to have it painted, price a
new pedestal, maybe the newer style? Just sayin.

Stus-List swan

2014-06-30 Thread Brent Driedger via CnC-List
This is a little off topic but somehow we can make this C&C related. Why do
Nautor Swan sailboats cost so much money? I understand they're very well built
boats however a 35-year-old Swan still costs over 20 times more than a C&C of
comparable size. Blisters and all!
