‎Well my black anodizing lasted 37 years - how bad can it be?

I am guessing they stripped the old ones with an acidic process, and it left
the surface rough.
I would have been better off sanding them all down instead of having them
strip them.
People in the plating business don't recommend black anodizing, because it
does not last near as long as the natural color, which is, well, the natural
color of aluminum.
What I did do to them, is coat them with PPG Strataclear,(Hard automotive
Clear Coat) which I used on the cabintop and areas of the deck not non-skid.
This is still holding up well and looks better than as anodized. I think if
you used a clear coating on a black paint, you would get much longer life.
I also did a test with the Strataclear over varnished teak around my
companionway, it is still great after 9 years. I am not sure why I don't do
that on all my teak. It just seems too good to be true. . . .

I had my pedestal and pedestal guard feet (two cast aluminum blocks at the
base of the guard) done last year by powder coating.

I can confirm that on the feet, there was issue with the baking process.
The end result is as if small bubbles of air were burst near the surface of
the aluminum, producing a few patches of crater-filled landscape. The
defect is very noticeable up close, but since I have reinstalled them I
never noticed.

When time comes to refinish the stanchions feet, I will avoid powder
coating. I was leaning toward re-anodization. Bill, any reason it came out
coarse?

Best,

Anyone have any luck with painting over the cancer while still on the boat?
