You're a little behind, please see the mail entitled 'New landing page' - we
didn't go with builds.apache.org either.

> Not sure why you didn't go with
> buildbot.apache.org. Taking ci.apache.org seems a little over reaching.

What planet are you on? This isn't a competition. Everything I do around
here you question with disdain, you continually angle at getting me to
advertise Hudson wherever possible.

ci.apache.org was chosen as buildbot.apache.org was rejected by other infra
members as being to specific. ci.apache.org was someone else's idea. So it
was enabled and I happily started setting up buildbot to use it.

Then I though it would be a good idea to create a mailing list where folks
could talk about buildbot and its services etc basically so I didn't have to
join 200+ dev lists. Someone then said why not make it a list for all build
services, so we did that.

You then wanted a landing page area that people could go to to 'choose'
between which build service they want, and you wanted to use ci.apache.org
for it that buildbot was already using and was advertised as such, I offered
builds.apache.org as an alternative, others in infra thought that creating
new subdomain for one page was too much (you could call it 'a little over
reaching') so I created a page called http://apache.org/dev/builds.html
(after ci.html was also rejected) - and I asked you to edit your section to
suit which you have yet to do.

Note that I am here for Buildbot, but I have bent over backwards to
accommodate your moaning about Hudson. You haven't asked Continuum or Gump
to advertise 'your' Hudson on their pages so why are you picking on me. I've
helped everyone by creating a landing page, by getting this mail list set
up, with the aim that every project can make use of for whichever build
service they want to use, and you're still not happy. Where are your
commits, what have you done?

No doubt I'll regret hitting send here but heck, doing all this volunteer
work only to get shot at every turn is getting to me.

I'm not sure if you've followed, but Nigel has for a long while been
at the cutting edge of developing and maintaining build services for
Apache projects. Implying that he's not contributing is pretty absurd.

Nigel's tool of choice is Hudson, yours is Buildbot. That's OK, the
more choice the better.

The problem that Nigel and others were bringing up is that by using a
domain name like "ci.apache.org" and text like "chosen by the
infrastructure team" (Buildbot entry on [1]) it seems like Buildbot is
somehow being preferred over the other CI tools we have. What's the
background to that?

You mention "other infrastructure members" preferring ci.a.o over
buildbot.a.o. Where did that discussion take place?

Sure, my paddy fit is over now.

I meant not contributing to the things he's been asking to get done so that
Hudson is once again on a level playing field. Not that it ever wasn't on a
level playing field, but I just got the impression he felt/feels threatened
somehow by the arrival of another build service.

Actually no, Buildbot was not my choice (but it is now). I agree more choice
is better, I also use Hudson and host it on my own server which another open
source project currently benefits from. Each has different features that
make them suitable for different jobs in different scenarios, there is some
overlap however.

It is not being preferred at all, hence my creating a neutral list and a
neutral landing page that lists all services, this is what people wanted I
thought.

The phrase "chosen by the infrastructure team" is valid however, I did not
choose Buildbot, this was done on the infrastructure list, I just happened
to be the one to pick the ball up and run with it and get it done. So it was
the choice of infrastructure as a whole that this become the build service
to use for their build farm. If Hudson needs more machines as more projects
come in and demand requires it, then Nigel is welcome to ask for more when
the time comes. In fact it is due to Yahoo! that we have the 4 machines we
do for build services currently for which we are obviously grateful.

If folks are not happy with that phrasing then I will of course remove it.

>

Mainly on #asfinfra IRC channel. It is open to everyone and lots of things
happen on there. Small decisions like this are chatted about and get done,
and to defend straight away, don't ask that every little decision made on
IRC get posted to the list as that's a slippery slope to nothing getting
done.

If folks are still not happy then I will request infra remove ci.apache.org
altogether and we'll use the machine name ceres.apache.org instead.

Now that we have made a mountain out of a molehill, let me know what else I
can do to alleviate any concerns. And one more time, this is not a
competition.

I must have missed this discussion, as the first time I noticed
Buildbot was in January when you started committing related stuff to
svn and then shortly after when Joe made a few references to Buildbot
in the board reports.

I had assumed that the Buildbot setup was something you were doing to
scratch a personal itch, but it seems that there's more to the story.
Any pointers?

Sure, first mentioned back in 2007 when assessing requirements for build
machines. Was also discussed on infra list as to what to do about it when
SpamAssassin were using their own instance, at that time it was decided they
would switch to Hudson.

More recently - November 2008 there was a proposal and a good discussion
went on on the infra-private list. That ended up with my getting access to 2
machines to get on with it. I can not quote from a private list so you'll
have to dig through the archives.

Thanks

Re: Welcome to the builds list!

2009-04-23 Thread Daniel Kulp

Is there any particular reason that the index page at ci.apache.org be updated
to add sections for Hudson and Continuum? Would that solve everyones issues?

Or maybe push buildbot stuff into ci.apache.org/buildbot, have
ci.apache.org/hudson and continuum. There "index" at ci.apache.org would
still mention and point to buildbot stuff, so existing blogs and stuff would
still be "accurate".

I'm failing to see what all the hub-bub is about.

I reckon I can do that yes. It is generated with twisted and buried in
buildbot somewhere but I'll look at doing that.

To be clear, I'll move the current index page that shows the default
'Welcome to Buildbot' to ci.apache.org/buildbot and replace it with a new
page that lists the other two CIs.

As much as it seems strange hacking Buildbot code to advertise other CI
servers on it, it's what people want so hey ho.

Gav,

Why should that page be generated by buildbot? Couldn't that one index.html
just be a static page checked into SVN someplace and served directly?

Actually I'm mistaken; all pages in buildbot are generated - except that one
index.html that we are talking about. It is already in svn at

infrastructure/buildbot/ceres/buildmaster/master1/public_html/index.html

I'll change it in the morning.

Re: Welcome to the builds list!

2009-04-23 Thread Justin Mason
fwiw, when we used Buildbot in SpamAssassin I had an apache instance
running mod_proxy acting as a reverse proxy, using some mod_rewrite
rules to serve a small set of static files and proxying for the rest:

http://svn.apache.org/viewvc/spamassassin/trunk/build/automc/etc-apache-local-conf-httpd.conf?r1=562468&r2=629767

however there was a problem with that, in that mod_proxy couldn't deal
with the streaming results produced by buildbot. may have been fixed
since then though.

Re: Welcome to the builds list!

2009-04-23 Thread Nigel Daley
Gavin, I really appreciate what you've done to setup builds@ and
build.html. I think these are 2 steps that are very helpful to the
Apache community. It has been very confusing for projects on where/
how to get automated builds up and running and I think these steps
greatly improve that situation. Your activity here has propelled us
to file INFRA-2015 to simplify Hudson's URL.

Over the past 2.5 years of running Hudson (first on lucene.zones and
then centralizing on hudson.zones), there have been a number of
frustrating issues I've had to work through to get the resources we
needed for Hudson. Now, I simply want projects to understand the
options they have available.

I apologize that I haven't been reading infra@ very closely over the
past couple months and could have weighed in sooner with the
suggestion that buildbot follow the hudson and continuum naming
convention. Given you've now got ci.apache.org, I thought we agreed a
couple weeks ago that the top level index.html would simply provide a
pointer to the 3 build solutions. It wasn't clear why there was a
change in that plan. Perhaps that's less important now that you've
created build.html.

Thanks,
Nige

Also, Gavin can we have ci.apache.org go to a page that
points to

the

3 CI choices that Apache projects have: Buildbot, Continuum, and

Hudson?

Absolutely, ci.apache.org was created a couple of months back
whilst

testing

buildbot and before this amalgamation of CIs list was thought
about. It
makes sense so I will do that soon, thanks for the suggestion

It might be good to mention this list there as well.
-Bertrand

Yep good plan.

A slight change to name to use as the main builds area to go to,
ci.apache.org has been advertised/blogged/tweeted/whatever as
belonging to
the buildbot setup. I think it is too late now to move that to
another

domain. Either way, a new name was needed for either buildbot usage
or the
main builds area (landing page?).

So, to keep inline with this list name etc, and Wendy proposed on
IRC that
builds.apache.org would be a better fit for the new area.

If there are no objections I'd like to ask infra if they could set
that up
for us? (cc:d)

Gav...

Hmm, not crazy about this, but ok.

You're a little behind, please see the mail entitled 'New landing
page' - we

didn't go with builds.apache.org either.

Not sure why you didn't go with
buildbot.apache.org. Taking ci.apache.org seems a little over
reaching.

What planet are you on? This isn't a competition. Everything I do
around

here you question with disdain, you continually angle at getting me to
advertise Hudson wherever possible.

ci.apache.org was chosen as buildbot.apache.org was rejected by
other infra
members as being to specific. ci.apache.org was someone else's idea.
So it

was enabled and I happily started setting up buildbot to use it.

Then I though it would be a good idea to create a mailing list where
folks
could talk about buildbot and its services etc basically so I didn't
have to
join 200+ dev lists. Someone then said why not make it a list for
all build

services, so we did that.

You then wanted a landing page area that people could go to to
'choose'
between which build service they want, and you wanted to use
ci.apache.org
for it that buildbot was already using and was advertised as such, I
offered
builds.apache.org as an alternative, others in infra thought that
creating
new subdomain for one page was too much (you could call it 'a little
over
reaching') so I created a page called http://apache.org/dev/
builds.html
(after ci.html was also rejected) - and I asked you to edit your
section to

suit which you have yet to do.

Note that I am here for Buildbot, but I have bent over backwards to
accommodate your moaning about Hudson. You haven't asked Continuum
or Gump
to advertise 'your' Hudson on their pages so why are you picking on
me. I've
helped everyone by creating a landing page, by getting this mail
list set
up, with the aim that every project can make use of for whichever
build

service they want to use, and you're still not happy. Where are your
commits, what have you done?

No doubt I'll regret hitting send here but heck, doing all this
volunteer

work only to get shot at every turn is getting to me.

Ooops, I "Gracefully Shutdown" a slave.

2009-04-23 Thread Grant Smith
Hi,

Which poking around on ci.apache.org, I happened across
http://ci.apache.org/buildslaves/ceres_ubuntu where I cheerfully hit the
shutdown button. Now it says "NOT CONNECTED", which leads me to think I've
royally screwed up.

Anyway, sorry about that. I think there should at least be some security in
place to prevent blunders of this nature ?

hehe, nice one. I've restarted it now.

Yep, absolutely, I'll look at it today.

Can you please try again? I guess we are now running on httpd 2.2.11 (actually
what server
used the above configuration?).
If it still shows the old problem can you please open a Bugzilla report against
httpd with more
details such that we can check and fix it?
