My wife and I have debated this for years now. I maintain that as
long as a can is not bulging or showing other signs of distress,
the stuff inside is safe to eat. "Palatable" is another thing.
based on what I read, the taste qualities do decline, and the
"best by" or "use by" dates are a subjective indication of how
  what's inside will taste.
None-the less, we now mark cans on top with a magic marker of
when their "use by" date is, and we (try to) rotate stock.

There are numerous YouTube videos of people eating “century eggs” aka thousand

2020-04-17 Thread Cameron Crum
To add to what Mike said, there is no stipulation that there be a road,
house, or anything else for that matter in the deployment section of the
477. It is simply where you can provide service and as he pointed out, that
is very loosely defined. As there is no hard standard for what providing
service really means, and no standard for confirming what is reported, it
can easily be taken advantage of. If you are not using this to your own
advantage, then I suppose that is your choice., but I know a lot of wisps
who would rather not have govt money competing with them, or alternatively,
would like to gt some of that money for themselves.

Re: [AFMUG] OT dinner

2020-04-17 Thread Carl Peterson
You can do ribs that way if you don't have a real smoker or an egg. foil
then chips in the bottom of a baking pan with the ribs on a rack above
them. ~4hr @ ~200 in the oven then finish them on a regular webber or
whatnot. If the chips start to smoke too much, squirt some water on
them. Not sure if this would work in one of them modern fancy air
circulating ovens - the metal pan needs to get hotter than the air temp to
make smoke but this generally isn't an issue in an oven that just cycles
the burner on/off.

It is for my equipment yard. About 2 acres with 5 cameras up 35 feet.
So I doubt PTZ is necessary, yes outdoor. Night if I can afford it.
Like to keep it under $500/camera If possible, but you get what you pay for.
Just trying to simplify the amount of wiring I will be doing at each pole.
And the poles will all have motion sensing LED parking lot lights at the top,
so night may not help that much.

Do you happen to know what it takes to swap a lumina to af-11?

Or am I stuck with calling saf or aviat for a replacement set of radios
that will volt up?

I believe SAF makes a Lumina to Integra converter part. You’d get more spectrum
use and bandwidth by going to Integra-WS as it is over an AF-11X.

Re: [AFMUG] OT cameras with sfp

2020-04-17 Thread Daniel White
Don't use PTZ.  They are far more hassle than they are worth except in
really unique situations, and end up missing whatever happened usually.

If you have to use something to minimize cameras... try a fisheye lens.

The IgniteNet mixed media converters are fairly inexpensive.

I've had a lot of interest in Verkada personally https://www.verkada.com/

Pricing is a bit high (especially at a $500 per camera budget) but
10-year warranty, onboard retention, and the cloud model is pretty
cool.  But cool comes at a cost for certain.

PTZ is a great compliment to overview cameras to go with them and an
operator that would use the PTZ to get a closer look at something or
follow someone.

For unmanned I agree, not really worth the expense.

[AFMUG] Is PRI voice still a thing?

2020-04-17 Thread Seth Mattinen
Is anyone still using/selling PRI delivered phone service these days or
is it pretty much dead?

I've had a fractional PRI for 10 years now. It comes off a mux using an
OC-12 SONET ring and it's pretty bulletproof (except for one time
someone broke into a CO to steal stuff). The problem with VOIP service
in the past is that I want it to work uninterrupted if there's a data
related problem or router problem. Are there any equivalent quality
solutions to an OC-12 delivered PRI in VOIP land or does everyone just
accept its issues in exchange for lower cost?

Probably the second thing.

But maybe the better way to look at it is that our standard for data
reliability has to go upward.

[AFMUG] OT Workers Comp problem

One of my guys decided to put his fingers between a trailer lunette ring and a
pintle hitch. Crushed two of them pretty bad. Lost some skin. Had to have
some parts re attached etc.

That was two weeks ago. He has been no call no show ever since. Does not
return calls from the workers comp person. He told his supervisor the the
doctor said he cannot work. I called the doctors' office. They said no using
that hand until it is better and no driving when taking the opioids

I have a company van that drives around town picking up these guys and hauling
them to the shop each morning. So he does not have to drive...

WC said do not fire him until he comes back to work. He is malingering. He is
milking it.
Not sure what I can or should do. We did do a write up and his supervisor said
he needs to sign it. Not sure if he saw it or not...--

Does he get the free end of the world government cash too while off for
this? the guy may be putting a down payment on his new mansion with all the
free money hes looking at.

we were by the balls when our guy broke his ankle from improperly operating
a ladder. Do you tell him to come back on light duty and risk him
"aggravating" the injury? Guys like this are a risk, and ive never met one
that was worth the risk of forcing back, they all know lawyers numbers, and
youre an evil business owner putting your profits above the well being of
the poor working man. At least thats what those lawyers are good at
convincing juries full of housewives. And oh boy, to fire or otherwise
mistreat a guy in the middle of the apocalypse, theyll vote you off the
island in a heartbeat

We ate the cost for a year. cost less in the long run.

Also, sometimes an address gets texted. And sometimes a guy milking a bum
finger overdoses on his opiates in his sleep. Sometimes a guy isnt a
problem anymore. sometimes a paypal account gets some money in it.
Sometimes a guy might just call Carol Fucking Baskin to feed a guy to a
tiger too

Do you have a signed employee manual that says ’no call, no show for 3 days
constitutes a voluntary resignation’? You might get away with claiming he

We also added a rule saying injured workers must follow the doctors
recommendations for physical therapy, if you don’t we get to fire you for
cause. This was after a guy hurt himself and then decided he wasn’t going to
do physical therapy because ‘it hurt’. No shit Sherlock. We couldn’t get him
released for work since he wouldn’t do the physical therapy and we couldn’t
fire him because that would be retaliation. Our workers comp lawyer was of
the opinion we could fire him for not doing physical therapy when we had
notified him it was a condition of employment when we hired him.

Since we didn’t have any of those things in place the first time this happened
we ended up stuck paying him until he finally got around to coming back to work
with a full release. We didn’t want to risk firing him at that point, so we
laid him off instead. Translated as we are never ever calling you back from
layoff, go collect unemployment.

The company pays for short and long term disability insurance for the
employees. For me it’s worth it to be able to be able to move these guys off
the payroll and onto short/long term disability if they are injured and can’t
get back to work. It avoids the workers comp hit since technically we are
still paying them.

[AFMUG] OT - bacon

2020-04-17 Thread Ken Hohhof
That got your attention, didn't it.

Steve seems to be right, chicken thighs are hard to find in the stores. Why
is that? I thought most of the world preferred every other part of the
chicken including wings. I see legs, where are the thighs going? Are
people buying them now because it's the cut with the most meat for the
money?

Oddly, the store I stopped at today had Halal boneless skinless chicken
thighs. I don't think I've ever bought halal meat or even seen it except in
specialty halal stores. Is some Muslim family going hungry because I bought
their halal chicken?

The other thing I noticed was they had a TON of bacon. I've never seen so
much bacon. Many brands and types. Maybe big pork processors in various
states are closing down due to Covid, but that doesn't seem to be offsetting
the bacon that isn't being sold to restaurants, which is apparently where
most bacon is normally consumed.

Bacon, bacon, bacon.

Well, we are partly to blame. The chicken thighs work great in pellet
smokers, because they tend to react well to the low and slow cooking method of
smokers. They don’t dry out as fast and the darker meat picks up the smoke
flavor really well.We have tried out a bunch of new recipes using chicken
thighs. We have a great one using the smoker and Jalapenos and cream cheese,
wrapped by chicken thighs and yes… bacon. Great stuff.

I heard a news story that said we have too much bacon and not enough pork
chops. Their theory was that folks at home eat less bacon than when they go
out to eat, but grill more foods like pork chops at home. Don’t know how true
that is.
