Re: [AFMUG] OT prepping

So...

Costco here looks like a prepper warehouse. The entire back wall is paper
towels/toilet paper which is pretty typical, although it has also spilled
down both sides of the warehouse and all the empty spots seem to have a
case of paper towels or toilet paper in it. I'm guessing someone at costco
corporate figured this out months ago and has started sending this stuff to
all the warehouses. We've just avoided the hysteria so far, but all it's
going to take is a few cases in montana and I'm sure that they will sell
all of this and more.

Still plenty of water everywhere. Safeway even had a 'must buy 3 to get
the deal' special on water at the front door with a big pile of water.

The only thing which is completely sold out everywhere is hand sanitizer.

Maybe these folks don't trust their tap water?  The fluoride is a
Communist plot to make us all sterile.  Ya gotta preserve the precious
bodily fluids.

Seriously though, we get flooding here on a fairly routine basis, and
when there's floodwater in the wells the town will tell you not to drink
the water.  Just fill a bathtub and you'll have 40-80 gallons stored
which is more than a person is going to carry home from Costco.  Bottled
beer is cheaper than bottled water.  Use your money to stockpile beer
instead.

Unfortunately beer not much use as hand sanitizer unless it's 120 proof.

There are now two version of the virus:

S-Cov and L-Cov.

L-Cov is what is believed to have gone through Wuhan and is extremely fatal.

S-Cov is less fatal.

What is here in the U.S. is unknown at this point.

yeah, the antenna itself doesn't look all that special, other than "They
deliver consistent gain response over the 57-71 GHz unlicensed frequency
band over a wide operating temperature range", and 44dbi with a 390mm dish
is a couple db improvement over what's available now, but the fact that
they have it attached to a chipset that supports whole band is the most
interesting part. Hopefully there will be some new radios coming out soon.

couple db improvement over what's available now, but the fact that they have it

Hopefully there will be some new radios coming out soon.

Yes, those photos from Kirkland WA have bothered me for awhile. I hope it’s
not typical. Every photo from elsewhere in the world has shown workers better
protected. The people at the Kirkland facility look like they’re ready for a
pottery class not transporting patients with a deadly virus.

So...

Costco here looks like a prepper warehouse. The entire back wall is paper
towels/toilet paper which is pretty typical, although it has also spilled down
both sides of the warehouse and all the empty spots seem to have a case of
paper towels or toilet paper in it. I'm guessing someone at costco corporate
figured this out months ago and has started sending this stuff to all the
warehouses. We've just avoided the hysteria so far, but all it's going to
take is a few cases in montana and I'm sure that they will sell all of this and
more.

Still plenty of water everywhere. Safeway even had a 'must buy 3 to get the
deal' special on water at the front door with a big pile of water.

The only thing which is completely sold out everywhere is hand sanitizer.

which has gotten low in the pantry (living 20 miles out of town and largely
working from home pretty much means that you keep a well stocked pantry
regardless of any personal prepper tendencies you may or may not have,
especially since a bad winter storm can mean that you don't want to go into to
town for a week or so).

Did anyone catch this yesterday.

https://www.who.int/dg/speeches/detail/who-director-general-s-opening-remarks-at-the-media-briefing-on-covid-19---3-march-2020

"But as we get more data, we are understanding this virus, and the disease it
causes, more and more.
This virus is not SARS, it’s not MERS, and it’s not influenza. It is a unique
virus with unique characteristics.
Both COVID-19 and influenza cause respiratory disease and spread the same way,
via small droplets of fluid from the nose and mouth of someone who is sick.
However, there are some important differences between COVID-19 and influenza.
First, COVID-19 does not transmit as efficiently as influenza, from the data we
have so far.
With influenza, people who are infected but not yet sick are major drivers of
transmission, which does not appear to be the case for COVID-19.
Evidence from China is that only 1% of reported cases do not have symptoms, and
most of those cases develop symptoms within 2 days.
Some countries are looking for cases of COVID-19 using surveillance
systems for influenza and other respiratory diseases."

may be specific to that software, but my gut tells me if this is something
mission critical and you don't want to monitor it for problems, just pay a

Bloomberg money either. I have too many things demanding my time already

I don't have experience with letsencrypt but a webserver software mailing

may be specific to that software, but my gut tells me if this is something
mission critical and you don't want to monitor it for problems, just pay a

Bloomberg money either. I have too many things demanding my time already

Still plenty of water everywhere. Safeway even had a 'must buy 3 to get the

Re: [AFMUG] OT prepping

2020-03-04 Thread Craig Baird
My daughter went to Disneyland last week for a few days with her high
school music department. She came down sick on the 8-hour bus ride home.
Flu-like symptoms, and it came on quite suddenly, which made us think flu.
We took her to the doctor. He ran flu and strep tests. Both were
negative. He said, based on the symptoms and sudden onset, he thinks it's
flu, despite the negative flu test. He didn't even mention Coronavirus.
Seems to me like like a Coronavirus test would have been in order.
Although at our little small-town hospital, I'm sure they can't even run
one. If I'd been there, I'd have pressed him about it. But my wife just
deferred to the doctor's opinion. He prescribed Tamiflu, and sent her on
her way. I hope he's right that it's flu, but it makes me wonder. What if
we're all walking around, unknowingly spreading it around town...

LetsEncrypt is pretty awesome. Certbot works flawlessly as long as you
don't fiddle around changing things on it.

I use Xymon to monitor systems but whatever you're using otherwise, just
send an alert if the cert is going to expire in <31 days.

a Coronavirus test would have been in order. Although at our little small-town

Use your money to stockpile beer
instead.

Anything other than this is pure speculation at this point. We don't know
anything about this virus. Most everything I hear or read about this virus
starts off with the equivalent of "WE ARE ALL GOING TO DIE". But if you bother
to listen or read the article, it always has "may" or "some experts". The
current official incubation period is 2-14 days, but hey lets just report 14
days and base all our models on this and report it as the most likely scenario.
We don't know how long it lives on surfaces. We don't know how it reacts to
UV light. We don't know how it will do in warm/humid conditions.

My opinion (just as valid as anyone else's), This virus has been in the states
before the first reported case. People have had it and recovered thinking it
was just the flu. Not everyone exposed is going to get it. Not everyone who
gets it is going to need to be hospitalized. Not everyone who gets
hospitalized will die.

The media once again is doing us a huge dis-service. They are hyping this thing
way out of proportion. Was at Wal-mart yesterday. Every can of Lysol or Lysol
type of product was gone. Every package of disinfectant wipes were gone.
Every bottle of any sized hand sanitizer, gone. Crazy. The closest reported
"maybe" case is over 1300 miles away. God forbid we get a reported case in
Florida, what will happen then? Going to start burning and looting?

Maybe they can send it to us.  Today for the first time I heard the
term “surge capacity” applied to hospital beds. Person was saying
US healthcare industry has made hospitals efficient same way as
airlines, aim for zero empty beds, with the result that there’s not
much surge capacity.  Let’s hope somebody’s looking at ways to open
up more facilities in areas where outbreaks happen.  The Chinese
weren’t stupid with their modular approach to quickly creating a
field hospital. Reminds me of MASH.  Time for a bug out!

I did a quick Google search for “hospital surge capacity” and the
first page of results were mostly studies after Katrina. A
hurricane is worse because it closes down hospitals and pharmacies,
eliminating capacity. With the coronavirus what I suspect we need
to guard against is infecting all the hospital staff and first
responders so they get quarantined.  This appears to be happening
with that nursing home in Kirkland, Washington.  25 firefighters
are now quarantined as a precaution because they had been to that
facility.

This is one I didn't expect. My nephew's father just came back from a
cruise and he's now in a hospital in Sacramento. We've been told he has
COVID-19, and he is not expected to survive. He is in his mid 70s.

Maybe they can send it to us. Today for the first time I heard the
term “surge capacity” applied to hospital beds. Person was saying US
healthcare industry has made hospitals efficient same way as airlines,
aim for zero empty beds, with the result that there’s not much surge
capacity. Let’s hope somebody’s looking at ways to open up more
facilities in areas where outbreaks happen. The Chinese weren’t stupid
with their modular approach to quickly creating a field hospital.

I did a quick Google search for “hospital surge capacity” and the first
page of results were mostly studies after Katrina. A hurricane is worse
because it closes down hospitals and pharmacies, eliminating capacity.
With the coronavirus what I suspect we need to guard against is
infecting all the hospital staff and first responders so they get
quarantined. This appears to be happening with that nursing home in
Kirkland, Washington. 25 firefighters are now quarantined as a
precaution because they had been to that facility.

We think he got it on the cruise ship. From what I'm hearing, he's been
in the hospital for at least 4 days. Princess cruise from San Francisco
to Mexico.

I don't have the whole story, as he was married 4 times, and my wife's
sister was #1. I'm kind of getting it from what she tells me after
talking to her sister. The neph went to Sacto (Roseville actually) late
last night. He wasn't able to get to the hospital before he passed. They
probably would not have let him near him anyway.

Re: [AFMUG] OT: Corona-fu

2020-03-04 Thread Bill Prince

I have no idea. I'm getting this 3rd or 4th hand.

His (current) wife was with him & I don't know where she is.

Re: [AFMUG] giant cellular panel antennas

2020-03-04 Thread Nate Burke
See, back about 1000 years ago, they made cameras that, believe it or
not, that's all they did, they couldn't even play games. But these
ancient 'Cameras' had special tunable filters and were able to bend and
modify beams of light to make far away objects appear closer, all
without the help of any computer aided 'software'

I have an SX40 camera that's about 5 years old now, 32x optical Zoom, It
can take very clear pictures of equipment on the tower from the ground.

Excellent. The blue line goes to the tower with the giant
panels being installed. The yellow line about a mile east
goes to the tower that I thought Windstream said was VZW
and they could get me fiber at.

So you’re saying the blue line is a spur built by PEG off
the DATA project fiber built with BTOP funding?

I’m still curious what those big panels in arrays of 3
are. I know cellular antennas have gotten bigger, but I
haven’t seen them that big before. I keep worrying that
LAA will arrive and 5 GHz will become useless.

You're right in that DATA goes down Duffy. It's just the
only significant network that's anywhere near there. Well,
ComEd goes down 30 from 23 to Rock Falls, but they're not
selling to others.

Check the attachment. Yellow across the top is DATA.
Vertical yellow on the right is Windstream. Blue is
PEG\Uniti\BlueBird. Brown is a build that never happened.

If I’m remembering right, it was on the south tower.
Quite low on the tower, I assume because the tower

couldn’t handle the windload otherwise.

I thought the DATA project BTOP fiber went down Duffy to
University then crossed the tracks to Preserve. Also I
seem to remember some telco carrier like Windstream or
CenturyLink trying to sell me fiber transport and checking
towers that were on their network. I remember there was
one south of Hinckley. I could be confusing the Kane Rd.
tower with the one at Leland Rd. Which BTW is a weird tower.

Sprint and US Cellular are there. T-Mobile is down on
University Rd. I don't have accurate information for AT&T
and Verizon for that
