I grew up in central Illinois (East Peoria). We had many field trips to Chicago or Saint Louis , both of which were close to a 4 hour drive (by old yellow school bus). I don't recall getting sick, except for maybe our chaperones.

Costco here looks like a prepper warehouse.   The entire back wall is paper towels/toilet paper which is pretty typical, although it has also spilled down both sides of the warehouse and all the empty spots seem to have a case of paper towels or toilet paper in it.  I'm guessing someone at costco corporate figured this out months ago and has started sending this stuff to all the warehouses.   We've just avoided the hysteria so far, but all it's going to take is a few cases in montana and I'm sure that they will sell all of this and more.

 

Still plenty of water everywhere.   Safeway even had a 'must buy 3 to get the deal' special on water at the front door with a big pile of water.

 

The only thing which is completely sold out everywhere is hand sanitizer.

I can definitely see the toilet paper, and other long-term shelf goods, as I personally am looking at what I need to reverse-quarantine myself here for a few weeks/months.     But it's going to be to go ahead and restock some stuff which has gotten low in the pantry (living 20 miles out of town and largely working from home pretty much means that you keep a well stocked pantry regardless of any personal prepper tendencies you may or may not have, especially since a bad winter storm can mean that you don't want to go into to town for a week or so).
