I only wanted to establish a time line.  Since my own experience is
pretty limited.  sounds like your experience is one of the more
rounded ones mentioned in this thread.  I felt wd were decent 
quality too.  But good to hear a good report that spans a number of
users.

Yeah, that alone has to be a good testimony.  I suspected the wd doom
sayers were more repeating what they heard, as against real
experience.  I have had two out of 5-6 fail.  So couldn't really get
a handle on it from that.  One was nearly past the warranty.
But also 35 years in heavy constsruction hasn't left me very gentle
with tools and equipment, so I may have abused things more than most.
