Hello Wrenches,

I wanted to look into this to see why a diode might be used in something
like a heat load. William is right that a typical heat load wouldn't be
considered a 1/2 wave load. However, some power level switches (like the
little knob on the hair dryer) may engage a diode that will allow it to
only use the top 1/2 of the voltage waveform. This would cut the power by
~ 50%.

Here is a good article explaining what 1/2 loads are as well:
https://www.electronics-tutorials.ws/diode/diode_5.html

It doesn't explain why the Envy and EG4 struggle with this common type of
load, which seems like a serious design flaw.
