My gofast Giordana has Sachs (Campagnolo Ergopower) 8 speed brifters. I
like them a lot, and appreciate the high quality feel of the Campagnolo
stuff. It just feels solid and works well after 20 years.

I bet the high end Shimano stuff (with metal levers) is similarly nice, but
I've only tried Tiagra and Sora 9 speed controls. The plastic levers on
those felt flimsy.

One advantage of Campagnolo brifters: they're much easier to rebiuld/repair.

One disadvantage of brifters in general: they're designed for drop bars,
and don't feel natural on other bar shapes. Bar-ends are more versatile in
that regard.
