To answer your question, I use brifters with my Deore just fine, but they are 9-spd brifters (Ultegra).
My only dislike about brifters, is that in my experience, they don't work as well with non-standard chain ring sizes. I was always working with trim positions etc. with my standard/favorite setup with 28-38-48 rings. I got tired of it and went to bar-ends, and will not go back. With that said, I still use brifters on both my tandem and triplet bikes, but I use the (more or less) Shiimano standard chain ring setup there.
