it's not against the grain, or it shouldnt be. rivendell displays the roadeo with brifters. its fine and they work great. if thats what you like, then you should run it. the funkiness with shimano brifters for me is always in front. its a bummer when your favorite shifter forces you to buy a new crankset, bb, chain, cassette, and both derailers. hopefully you'll find a combo that works for you that is not that involved.
