Like a rubber tube that fits over the stay, and then you clamp the tube in 
the clip? Sounds promising.
Better idea than a Silly Putty failsafe connection: pull it slowly like 
taffy, but a sharp shock will shear it off clean. Knead it back together to 
reinstall.
