I think BQ has shown some (British?) bikes with mid-fork fender stays. I do 
like the look of Pudge's example. 

My V-O fender clips never clipped very tightly, and I've definitely knocked 
them out with sticks. I just bought new stays, though, expressly to have a 
tighter fender mount. 

Now I'm imagining filing a divot into a stay and using some sort of 
spring-loaded ball bearing to hold the stay in place... like a ratchet 
handle. Like a 5 ounce metal quick release... never mind.
