I think the pic illustrates your point, which is that the mid-fork fender mount 
solution could look fine, even normal, if the stay-bending is done with care.

Yes, that's what I mean.  Even though I thought it up in my own head, I 
expected other folks to had thought of it as well.  At least I think I thought 
it up in my own head.  Maybe I subconsciously was remembering having seen it 
elsewhere, and merely remembered it.  I make no claims on the intellectual 
property.  When I was thinking about alternative fender stay locations, I was 
thinking about it from a weight-weenie perspective.  The stays are a tiny bit 
shorter when they are run that way.
