One thing i've noticed is that people really like to keep the amount of wheel movement to a minimum, either by taking advantage of small teeth changes in the rear only, or keeping the front spaced really close together. It makes me think that maybe switching to a single ring up front would make more sense. I've already got a WI DOS freewheel en-route (17-19 for me) and then decide on the fixed side, maybe a 16 for to high gear.
