I once hit a rock between the size of an olive and a walnut and it cut
the sidewall of a 27" Pasela....ruined the tire and I had about 3
miles on it at the time. I ordered another tire and the pair lasted
around 3000 miles. I have had really good luck with the Urban Max
Panaracer tires....these are blackwalls with a yellow rubber inside
and a tread exactly like the Pasela. The wire bead blackwall Pasela is
also a fairly robust tire. I still use Panaracer tires on my
derailleurless bicycle but ride 700x42 (38 mm actual) Schwalbe
Marathons Supremes on my geared bicycle. These are very nice, comfy
and speedy enough. These cost quite a bit but inspire confidence. I
might add that I am at about 270 now and still haven't had a major
problem with my 27x 1 1/4" Pasela tires at 90 psi. I really think its
the rocks cutting the sidewalls that does it. I am very careful to
avoid that on my local route. On the Marathon equipped bike I don't
worry about it so much.
