You will need a caliper. Pull the pedals off and measure the length of the spindle. It only matters if you are unhappy with the chain line. You can check out Sheldon's web site for a good discussion of this.
Of course, the other possibility here is that the first law mechanics has been violated. "Never try fix anything on a bad hair day."
