Hey Paul, One more thing that just occured to me to check (you may have already done this) is that the rear derailer springs are working/keeping good tension on the chain.
Dang, I didn't realize that Wippermans were that expensive over there. They're not that cheap here either... they're like $25, whereas you can get a KMC for about $15.
