I like Pasela 35s for the max in 700c, at least on road applications. That's great for mixed terrain, and already feels like it borders a wagon wheel in terms of overall diameter. That's one of the benefits of 650B for me -- go as fat as 42mm and it feels fast and fantastic. Off-road is another story - full on 29er looks pretty good.
