you're not limited to a 12-27.  you can use a compact double and run a
cassette with a 30, 32 or even a 34 in the back if you need a lower
gear.  with a 34 up front, a 30t cog in the rear would be around 30
gear inches I think.

and FWIW, I've had no issues using a short cage derailer with a 30t in
the back.  I'm sure a 32 would work too.
