For distance cycling efficiency and freedom from pain it's best to err
towards the shorter cranks. Long cranks will over extend the natural
range of knee motion and may cause long term injury. A good length
will allow a rider to get out of the saddle to force a climb and he
will not be bobbing about.

Using long cranks tends also to force the rider into slow cadence and
high gears further stressing the legs and back.
