At a race my company promoted and operated BITD, a young rider hot out of triathlons in Texas named Lance was riding a mash-up of bar end shifter for the front derailleur and an STI lever for the rear. He preferred the infinite trim available to the friction bar end that the STI couldn't match. I agreed then. He had to comply with sponsors (Shimano) and run all STI the next year.
