Friction for durability, flexibility and I know how to make them work. I never could get the hang of servicing indexed and I had two brifters go bad but never a bar end. Then, ‘will this work with that?” is really never an issue - swap wheels, cassettes, freewheels, chainrings etc with hardly a thought. I’ve heard plenty of noisy indexed drive trains and missed shifts.
