Another good ride is the Transportation Alternatives NY Century ride
in early September.  You can sign up for varying distances from about
15 up to 100 miles.  The roads aren't closed for it so you don't get
that experience, but the crowds are a bit less and bit mellower.  You
still have to watch out. Some bozo ran into me with her bike while I
was stopped at a a red light and bent my front fender stay.  It was
field reparable, but annoying none the less.
