I rode the past two years; afraid I can't ride this year. Last year was *really* wet/cold. My Rambouillet was one of the few bikes I saw with fenders (www.flickr.com/photos/millhiser/3503640659) When will the people learn? :-)
Yes, do be careful out there. In 2008 I personally witnessed 12 different crashes/dropped bikes. The NYPD do a magnificent job closing 42 miles of NYC streets to cars, but 30,000 people with a mass start have all sorts of safety and bottleneck issues.
