AJ, It's a lot of fun. I've done the ride twice, skipped it last year, will skip it again this year. One word of caution, please be careful of the other people out there. There are a lot of riders who use that event as their first "long" ride of the season and possibly their only. And they can be incredibly sloppy and reckless. My girlfriend witnessed a guy break his arm right in front of her as he crashed into another guy he was racing against.
Also, if you start with the main pack, there is quite a bit of standing around, starting, then stopping again for the first few miles. Really gets jammed up before entering Central Park. I can't guarantee it, but I've heard registering as a VIP (more $) will allow you a start at the head of the pack. I assume this means you won't have to wait, which if I did it again I'd probably go for. Aside from these negatives, I had a great time both times. It's an awesome way to see NYC and to ride roads, highways and bridges that are otherwise car-only.
