Friction shifting more than 9 sprockets is too much of a pain for me. Even with a 9 speed cassette, I find that friction shifting is a bit finicky. I use the DiaCompe 11 spd DT shifter on my 9 speed setup and find that the big barrel of the shifter makes for easier/smoother shifting.
