Rams came as completes with first-generation 9-speed Shimano 105 triple derailers and road-ish 12-25 (maybe it was 12-27) cassette, plus Sugino XD cranks. My recollection of the fd is that it was less ridgey than later road and mtb stuff. I think his Deore mech will work, he just needs to nail the height and angle. It can be a bugger sometimes.
