Thanks again to everyone for all the useful perspectives!  Andy's reply in 
particular really speaks to what I'm wondering about.  If a Rivendell 
really feels like a higher quality bike and is less fatiguing (read more 
enjoyable) over middle distances then that appeals to me a lot.  As I get 
older and more achy but still able and wanting to do 75 mile rides with 
some regularity (thanks Advil!) comfort means a lot.  I know prices for the 
RB-1 peaked some time ago and even fairly priced, good condition examples 
with up-graded components seem to languish on Ebay but I assume if I can 
honestly say it's an NOS bike/build with one 20 mile shakedown ride I think 
it would bring a better premium that if I did a couple of metric centuries 
on it.  Fortunately it's not nearly spring here in Vermont (was 1 degree 
this am) so I have some more time to ponder.  Now if I'd only started this 
thread before that new 57 Roadeo frame sold on Ebay for $1500!
