If you still have one of those ~$1000 bikes, you could move some or all of the parts over to the new frame. Then you can spend time finding parts to put the old frame back on the road, or simply sell the leftovers.
If you don't have a spare bike, there's always Craigslist. Any size bike will work as a parts donor. You need to be a little careful on component sizes, but it's a learning experience.
