As a couple of others mentioned, there is usually less space under a
rolled edge metal fender than plastic.  My (only) example -  Schwalbe
Marathon Cross 700x38 tires would not fit under PB Cascadia or
Berthoud 45mm fenders  However, they would fit under 50mm Berthoud on
my (now departed) Surly Cross Check.

The same tires do easily fit on my Hillborne with SKS fenders.

As for putting on Berthoud, the longest time was spent making a
bracket for the rear seatstay bridge.  But I figured about 3 hours
each for the two install jobs.

That's the other problem.  Ended up buying two sets of metal fenders
for that bike.  But boy, were they nice during the winter months.

It's a project, but if your heart is set on them, nothing else will
do.  And the effort is worth the reward.

Presently, though, all my bikes have plastic fenders.  And they'll
probably stay that way.  Metal are nice, but I just prefer the
plastic.
