Shifting while standing is a lot easier with indexing. Sometimes you just have
to concentrate too much on the road to finesse a gear change safely. I
routinely switch from index to friction with my Shimano bar ends. It's a mood
thing; if I'm feeling lazy, I use indexing.

All of your various responses have been quite informative. Thank you
all. But all of this discussion begs the question; what is the advantage of
indexed shifters over friction? In my mind, there is none, and I now give the
edge to friction. Tell me why I'm wrong. :)

shifters was always inneed of adjustment, but only after an annual
overhaul.Turned out that I greased the threads on the DT adjuster
barrel/cablestop (when I shouldn't have) and so whenever I turned my
handlebars, the SIS cable housing would spin the barrel out of adjustment.John
