I spend 90% of my time in VS2008 with the other 10 between Project,
Word, Excel, etc. When I work in VS I have two to four instances open
at any one time. One for the Web Service I am writing, one for the
the one that I am upgrading, and at least one Test harness or GUI
interface to validate my changes.

Because we are in only 1 primary application we don't get a real feel
for what an OS can do.

If instead you did did hobby work with your pc, maybe video editing,
sound editing, model railroad track design you might find that
different apps work better or worse between OS versions.

Now why don't you go get a cup of coffee.
