Again, that's a backwards way of looking at it. Survival has little
to do with it; reproducing is what counts. A mutation that enables a
creature to live 1000 years but renders them sterile will not be an
evolutionary advantage. You have to look at it from the perspective
that organisms are simply a necessary intermediate vehicle that genes
use to try to make more copies of themselves. Read Dawkins' _River
Out of Eden_ (ISBN 0465069908) for an excellent explanation and
depiction of the idea.
