I don't have a smart phone yet.

If you have a smart phone with built-in GPS, aren't the maps updated
automatically? Some of the phones have spoken turn by turn directions just like
the Garmin and Tom Tom units. I have a Tom Tom I use for cross country trips
and am constantly bombarded with e-mails to upgrade the maps. I have yet to do
any upgrades. We have a built in GPS in the car we take on most trips, so the
standalone GPS unit is used less.

I believe the maps are only good on that individual unit, so if the unit breaks
or is stolen, I'm not sure if it is transferable.   How long before they
obsolete the unit?  That's another good question.

I also wonder what time frame lifetime is. Tech companies have a habit of
stopping support for things, one of the worst offenders being Samsung (6
month old product). Tom-tom pulled support for some products too. In Spain
roads change on a daily basis, well seems like it. So even updates are out
of date. So really if you go places that the roads change and rely often on
the maps being up to date then get the lifetime otherwise don’t bother with
any. It's not worth the money for once a year. As an aside to how bad Garmin
are at support, I emailed from their website a question. I had European maps
and wanted the lifetime USA/European. I asked them and they didn’t even
bother to reply. All this IMHO

I have a Garmin GPS Nuvi 265W with the north america NT 2011.10 map.  The
current available is nt 2013.

The one-time update is 49.95, the lifetime  update is 89.95.

Is it really worth updating a map?  Does it make much of a difference?
Seems like a lot to pay since the unit only cost me about $100.00.
