Telent uses port 23 and yet I connected to both hotmail and gmail on port 25 using port 23 from my home pc.
telnet uses port 23 yes, but: telnet mx1.hotmail.com 25 times out just like postfix already showed telnet mx1.hotmail.com 587 ehlo localhost works ?, you will here see starttls quit, to close the connection
