/To test the connectivity, try using a TELNET client to 173.194.78.26 port 25
and see what connections happen, and if you get any rejection messages.
That will tell you more about what is going on than
traceroute will, in this instance./

Installed telnet on my server and opened port 23 in my firewall. Tried
gmail smtp address again and also mx4.hotmail.com. Both connections time
out. This got me thinking. Viktor stated I need to use port 25 to connect
to other mailservers. Telent uses port 23 and yet I connected to both
hotmail and gmail on port 25 using port 23 from my home pc.

/You say your hosting provider is blocking port 25. I am puzzled that
you're suprised when you're unable to make outbound connections to port 25.

>From all the how to guides on the internet I came to the conclusion that
mail has to be received on port 25 (mandatory) but mail can sent form any
port. Guides on the internet showing how to bypass port 25 using ports 465,
587 and 2525 to send mail (although they have not worked for me).

If you are saying that email has to be sent on Port 25 I have obviously
misinterpreted the whole smtp thing and the concept of submission.

I did look at the postfix readme files over a year ago and found them (like
many server owners) overly complex and cryptic.

"postfix outbound default to port 25, but hotmail see your ip as dynamic"

I have no idea why as I have a static IP. I configured this myself changing
/etc/resolv.conf /etc/hosts and /etc/sysconfig/network/scripts/ifcfg-eth0.

I did have port 25 unblocked by my VPS provider thinking I could use another
port. I will ask them to open it again.
