How do you think a competent sys admin sets the EHLO under the
circumstances of not buying a domain name, and not establishing a
business relationship with a third party?
Anybody with a server connected to the Internet has a business
relationship with a third party - that is, their connectivity provider.
And, unless you have PI address space, the IP address of your sever is
allocated by your connectivity provider. So, assuming your connectivity
provider is competant, there will be forward and reverse DNS in place
for that IP address. So there is no problem with setting your EHLO
greeting to be the hostname found in your provider's DNS.
Obviously, that fails if your provider isn't competant. But the solution
to that is to get a better provider, not to blame the recipients of your
email.
