Hi.
A friend of mine has an old laptop which suddenly died.
The battery does not work anymore and even when plugged in a wall socket nothing happens. Actually, if I plug the laptop in a wall socket and push the power bottom, the power light comes on for a second, then it turns off and it's the end of it. Do you know anyone who could have a look at it and if the battery and the recharger are both gone, can help my friend to retrieve the data from the hard disk?

I can do that, for a modest fee. I'll measure the voltage off the charger to see if it is the problem (often is) if that's ok will research the options, sometimes there is a separate power board that is a fiver for parts but an hours work to get replace it, sometimes it's the socket and as Richard says the cost can be prohibitive if it's on the motherboard.

Data recovery is straightforward with a hard disk to USB adapter plugged to the recipient machine.

Replacement sockets are usually charged at £65 - £130 if it is just the socket itself. Most places send them away to specialist PCB soldering companies.

A replacement charger is often less than £30 and 3rd party batteries in the £30 - £60 region.

ACR Computers in Stamford are a decent place, they'll do an inspection for £25 or so and say what it would cost to resolve it (or advise against).

There's a laptop repair place on Lincoln Road not used it personally http://www.cambslaptoprepairs.co.uk/prices.php

I have also used a place in Cambridge for screen repairs "while you wait" http://www.cambridgelaptoprepair.co.uk/ their business is growing fast http://www.simonsaysprofiles.com/2009/09/cambridge-laptop-repair/

PC World have a standard price for fixing laptops that is £228 from memory, yes that's over two hundred pounds !
