Canadian ballast water law underlines need for training
(5 July, 2005)The Canadian government is set to bring in a law which will enforce the provisions of IMO's International Convention for the Control and Management of Ships' Ballast Water and Sediments. It will also be very similar to water ballast management regulations in force in US waters.
Although the IMO Convention itself may not be mandatory for some time, moves by countries such as the US, and now Canada, underline the need for ships' staff to have a through knowledge of the rules and at the same time be able to carry out water ballast operations safely.
The Convention provides that all officers and crew involved in ballast water management must undergo appropriate training, and all ships must develop and follow a Ballast Water Management Plan.
Seagull's new onboard Ballast Water Management course enables ship staff to meet these requirements in a real-life environment, onboard their vessels. With a CBT module and a workbook of practical and theoretical exercises, it covers all the training requirements laid down in the Convention.
Upon completion of the course, Seagull will issue a certificate of competence to successful candidates.
The new course follows the model set by other successful onboard courses certified by classification societies and approved by major flag states such as Ship Security Officer, Onboard Assessor, ECDIS and Tanker Safety.
With onboard courses like Ballast Water Management, Seagull is working to help you meet your safety, environmental and regulatory goals.
Safeguarding operation through learning
