I have the LS-30, which has a film holder much like the LS-1000. The
film holder scans one-at-a-time, requiring removal and repositioning
between each scan. Even getting the film properly positioned into the
holder in the first place is a clumsy process. (The LS-30 also has a
filmstrip module, which is what I use to batch scan, and a slide
module.)

I avoid the film holder like the plague - it is incredibly tedious and
time-consuming to use. I only use it when digging out old 110 and 126
negs and performing make-do scans with the film precariously mounted
in the holder.

Methinks you will find scanning one-at-a-time with the Nikon film
holder is not a pleasant nor representative introduction to the joys
of film scanning. The LS-1000 *was* top-of-the-line, but technology
has advanced. Prices for very capable new film scanners have dropped
very close to the price you mention for the used LS-1000.
