The 77 is very sharp at all apertures. I would expect it to have
slightly more DOF than the 85mm f1.4, though likely not so much
as to be really noticed. The 100mm f2.8 macro (mine is the
legendary A version) is also excellent wide open. I don't know
if the AF version matches the A lens for performance.
I have used both wide open for portraits and have been very
pleased. The 200mm f2.8 offers some wonderful possibilities for
limiting DOF. A fw years ago, I put my 80-200 f/2.8 onto some
extension tubes and was shooting H&S portraits wide open at the
long end of the zoom. This gave the classic eyes in focus, ears
out of focus look. Unfortunately, my Tokina is not as sharp wide
open as I would like, so I only tried it once.
