In my test, LED 1 is also flashing. The USB virtual
com port is also correctly presented as /dev/ttyACM0
but I could not talk to it with gtkterm/cutecom under
Linux. If I flash the hex file with lpc21isp, I can talk
with the device with gtkterm/cutecom.

I need to check. In my case, I have to reflash it
with lpc21isp (put ICSP switches to the ON positions).
